    Default diplomats

how come whenever a foreign diplomat tries to initiate contact with me it never works? i have about 20 foreign diplomats each turn near all of my cities, they bow and present a scroll like they're getting ready to talk diplomacy but no negociations start. they just bow, present scroll then its onto the next diplomat until the AIs turn has ended. is it a bug? its really getting on my nerves

supposedly thats them trying to 'bribe' your cities. But I have never had them bribe a city off me

yeah its rly expensive to do so.

    I have, once.

Yeah they're attempting to bribe your offical whenever they do that. Only time you'll notice anything wrong when they do that is when you notice your city/castle or army/officer suddenly turn on you.

Happens extremely rarely, but it does happen.

every now and then theyll offer me an alliance IF i pay them around 55000...now lets see should i accept an alliance with a dirt poor, powerless nation like spain when i, the hre, control all of france, germany, italy, hungary, poland, greece and parts of turkey....hmmm..i dunno its tempting

hungary also offers me ceasefires every now and again if i pay them 139,000 per turn for 4 turns..hungary, mind you, controls 1 city and has almost a full army stack...compare that to my eastern border line which streches from stettin to bucharest and has 9 armies, all professional (zwei handlers, gothic and teutonic knights, pavise crossbowmen, etc)

they said the diplomacy was improved in this game...ive yet to see it

reject all offers of peace and crush your opponents with an iron fist! than make vassals out of them

i had hungary down to 1 city and surrounded it with 3 armies and sent a diplomat with full influence to negociate being a vassal and they countered my offer by saying give us $152,000 or they would attack...then i just gave up and anihilated them

so i dunno if they are that stupid or just suicidal

Yea that happens to me. Its normally because your reputation is bad. Anyone know how to improve your rep? That would definately help alot in my campaings.

I don't think you can. One way I figured out how to stop everyone from hating you, is don't make so many alliances. Then your "power" is average or lower and people don't see you as much of a threat and they won't pay much attention to you. So for instance if your England,i would only make alliances with HRE, Milan and maybe Spain.

For reputation, avoid doing things that lower it, like killing prisoners, exterminating populations, breaking diplmatic agreements or declaring war (if you want to go to war with someone, provoke them into DoW against you).

Meanwhile, to raise rep, offer 'gift' to attack factions the AI is at war with. Park diplos near all factions involved in wars with same factions you are (if they refuse, offer same gift +2 or 300 florins, they'll accept). Every time you gift you get +relations with that faction, every time you make the attack you promised, you get +reputation for your faction. IMO gifting to attack rebels is an exploit, and I have a House Rule to never do it. If you do, it can ruin your game - your rep goes to max and stays there, and perfect relations with everyone = total barney, no one attacks you.

So what's with getting other factions to submit as vassals?

I can't get anyone to, regardless of how I try to... I will surround their last city with stacks and stacks of my armies closing in for the kill, and yet there are no takers... in RTW I couldn't get anyone to become a protectorate either, no matter what the circumstance. It sucked.

    Any tips?
