I have a question for all of you:

Do you think Death Penalties are best for certain types of people? (Murderers out of cold blood, Serial Killers...)

I don't think that most petty crimes deserve death, but rather quite a long time in prison will do fine. Take Tookie Williams for example, he did bad things, but while in prison, he became a changed man (supposedly). Do you think that people who commit serious crimes should still be put to death?

Why or why not?

Personally Yes and my argument goes that in Britain we abolished the death penalty due to mistakes being made 1/1000. Sucks if its your unlucky day. However with cctv and especially DNA you can prove without doubt that the culprit did the crime. It comes down to Rationality something which has been lacking recently. In Britain Ian Huntley is a good candidate. He will die one day that is a fact and he will die in prison. So why should taxpayers like myself pay for his existence in prison when our prisons are already full. His heinous crime has forfeited his life and justice to Holly and Jessica's parents has not been met. Maybe if it was reintroduced it might save lives but many would see it as barbaric and bring up his Human rights bull**** without thinking of our human nature.

You are wrong. Even today forensics are NOT able to say without doubt that someone did it. DNA is not unique you see. I hear people scream "What? But I thought" everywhere. But it is true. Most of our DNA is rather identical. Differences are found in small amount, and modern technology still is limited to comparing PARTS of this small area. They do not even compare complete DNA.

I recall reading that odds are, that for random sample of DNA you find something like 4-5 people who fit the DNA profile in UK.
Without other evidence you basically, assuming you find them all, have 25-20% chance to convict right guy.

That is, assuming that we can also rule out laboratory error and planted evidence.

So, because we still do not have absolutely foolproof method of finding guilty person I vote definite no.

No, if society teaches that killing another person is always wrong then the government should not be exempt from that rule. The death penalty is wrong in every instance, I think its an archaic resurgence of hammurabi's code in modern times and I dont think it deters criminals or sets a good example for the public.

You should try watching the Penn & Teller B.S. episode about the Death Penalty, they were pretty convincing.

You can see how something like that could be interpreted as a mixed message, cant you? The death penalty doesnt deter anything because criminals dont follow laws. They either commit crimes of passion, where they dont think of the consequences. Or they commit crimes of cold calculation, where they think they wont be caught.

To answer the original question the death penalty is the stupidest idea in human history the legal system is not perfect and if there is even a chance of innocent people being killed then such a system doesnt work. I'm completly against death penalties because it's a bit too drastic and unchangeable. And it doesn't help in prevention of crimes.
A passionate murder will still take place (due to it happening in the heat of the moment)
A professional murderer will still kill, he woudn't stop because of a chance on a death penalty.
And serial killers need doctors, dope and treatment, not some high voltage.

yes death penalty should be reserved for pedos; mass murderers, serial killers, war crimes commiters. Death Penalty is neither revenge nor prevention from these sort of scums but simple eliminating for good cancer cells and that's why I support its idea. Honestly, I think the State has power to sentence people to prison and determine their innocence and guilt, but honestly, the decision as to whether one person should die or not is too much to place on one person, who - after all - is still a person, and prone to emotions.

It doesn't even work as a deterrent, crime rates in the UK and Australia (where the death penalty does not exist) are much lower than those in America, where the death penalty supposedly works as a deterrent to crime.

If not the death penalty then at least prisons should stay as prisons should be not the way they are going with more amenities than a person who has committed a crime deserve. My Mum works with young offenders/little s***s from 13 to 18 and when they are in borstal they get Playstations, 3 meals a day and central heating!!! If thats not a deterrent for going to prison I don't know what is as it sounds like hell!
