In my second vanilla campaign they did the same. But that's not all. The pope found refuge in Tunis, built an army, and called upon a crusade on Rome. The papal states were the first who joined it, and most likely took rome 2 rounds later, as it did indeed belong to them when my spy arrived in italy 2 rounds after the battle.

As England, TLR too, Milan took Rome numerous times. Each time I would march myself down to Rome, retake it, give it back to the Pope, and bring my army home. I eventually got sick and tired of having to rinse and repeat that so I just left an army down right next to Rome to defend it from those vile Milanese.

Wow, I don't think that is proper behavior for a Catholic Faction.
On a side note, I have never conquered Rome before except as the Byzantines. As a Catholic Faction, I fear getting excommunicated by "Il Papa" (Pope in Italian), and then everyone sends crusaders at me.
