This is the first time I think I've seen you in the Basement MoralMan.
It's time for you to upgrade unless you like play Medieval 2 like you watch a Power Point slide show. I would also suggest a whole system upgrade, I take it your using a P4......to be fair you have down well to get this far with it so be don't be to disappointed.
Whether you’re looking to build or to buy the chip to get is the Core 2 Duo, couple that with an 8800 GTS/GTX and your setup to game happily on your pc for the next 3 years.
If in were to upgrade my PC i would definently buy the top of the line stuff as i dont want to keep upgrading every 6 months.
I would like the new pc to have the same lifetime as the one i'm planning to get rid of did.(about 3-4 years)
Many might disagree but I do think your lifetime expectations are possible. Perhaps you will have to do the odd upgrade here and there but Ive had my Dell for 3 years now and im still playing Oblivion at medium.
I suggest you look at the numerous "New PC" threads here such as this one to get into your head what is good and what is not (check the topic creators specs to the repliers thoughts). Use your best regional site (newegg.com for US, scan.co.uk / overclockers.co.uk for UK etc) and come back here with what you plan to make. Or someone here with much time might do a potential build list for you.
if u have the money get the E6600 core 2 duo. it is very good at overcloacking and can handle any game on the market(hell, it has 4mb cache LOL). if u do this u will need a new motherboard and some DDR2 ram too.u can get all three (quality stuff mind you) on new egg for about 600 bucks.
the 8800 gts with 640mbram you can snag for around 400-450 i think. also with the heat these new gpus are genrating make sure your case has good ventilation. with a gcard that big you will need at LEAST a 400w PSU but i would go for more;450-550. i assume u will keep your HD so it will be about a thousand bucks for everything if u already have the case and the PSU. not bad considering the speed of this chip. ive seen them in action and they are amazing! blows my single core fx-55 away.
You could probably get away with it, but on low detail and low resolution. You could run it with an upgrade to 1 GB RAM.
