    Default How to beat rome

IN online multiplayer, with maybe a 20-30k budget, how can I successfully beat the overused Roman army (usually praetorian cav., urban cohort, and archer auxilia, maybe 6 of each) with the Greeks, what units should i select and how should i line them up?

Select as much as phalanxes as possible, get some archers, maybe some artilary and line them up like this:

Your only weakness is the sides, put and extra phalanx there or hope they don't get you from the side.

I was trying to interpret your strategy here, aren't the sides of the front 2 boxes exposed by facing the enemy?? or is that the warning you were talking about?

To answer the original question, select Spartan hoplites! and armoured if you run out of money with cavalry and some archers (not too many of these though), Your phalanx should rule out their cavalry and archers shouldn't be too much of a problem if you have good quality soldiers. I wouldn't select many artillery as once battle has started they wont be of much use and you'll need all the fighting men you can buy. Especially if you chose a close formation.

I beat Rome by using Battle of Cannae or Battle of Gaugamela as formations. Also, a good V-phalanx formation also works in combat.

i generally use the straight line formation with 2 units deep armoured hoplites at the sides to avoid flank attacks
also use archers with flamin ammo on ( has a great effect on morale)
and a lttle cavalry with light peltasts to take what advantages u can

Beating the Romans with the Greeks in Multiplayer? No way. There already was a thread about that topic here, a few days/weeks ago.

Put your phalanx shoulder to shoulder so there is no gap between 2 units and some reserve phalanx units to worn of cavalry.

My normal roman army setup is 4 roman legionary cavalry, 5 archer auxilia, 4 triarii, one 1st Legionary cohort, and 5 legionary cohorts.

    Two things.

    1. This thread had serious necromancy on it. Twice.

    2. The thread is about how to beat the roman army set-up.

i know its a necro post, but something is bothering me. he said (originally (4 years ago)) that it was a 20k-30k battle.

Why wouldnt he just go 20 spartan hoplites? he could afford it, and he would be hard pressed to lose that battle...

Because if the Romans had any siege or decent archers, he'd lose a big chunk of his army before engaging. Perhaps 10 armored and 10 Spartans? Or 8 armored, 8 Spartans, 4 Cretans.
