    Default retraining first cohorts?

i've noticed that legionary eagle cohorts can't be retrained...can you only retrain them in their respective cities of origin? if so, what happens if everyone in that cohort dies? is the legionary eagle considered lost?

i bring this up because my legio primegenia has been constantly engaging full stacks of macedonians and i didn't blitz so these guys are amazing quality (royal pikemen with 2 or 3 gold chevrons! GOLD!) and my legionary eagle cohort is down to 67 men...i don't know how long they'll last

rep me if you like my posts, and it's highly likely you'll get some back

Yes... u need to take ur 1st cohorts to their place of birth to be retrained... that's why u should not engage ur legionary eagle unless u must or otherwise u'll have to ship them all the way back to Italy or adjacent AOR provinces

If the enemy kills everybody in ur 1st Cohort they take the legionary eagle to their nearest settlement... build a new one or following the house rules, u'll have to take the enemy city holding the eagle and then u can build the legionary eagle again

aw really? you're not supposed to engage the legionary eagles? that's no fun

well my legio primegenia's 1st cohort is down to 13 men (yeah i know)...let's say all of them die but i win the battle, what happens to the eagle then?

well not engaging them is playing it safe. i always use them coz i set my legion as historically accurate as i can, with the eagle in the right extremity of the first line. the trick is in using them in a way that they'll take less casualties. try using them to flank the enemy (while they r being held in place by the rest of your 1st line) while using the spear auxilia (or just regular auxilia if need be) to cover their flank. your 1st cohort will last considerably longer then.

the eagle goes to the closest enemy city.

    two more questions:

    1) i've got a couple cities that should be huge cities (they have population > 24,000) but i don't have the option to build an imperial palace. carthage and mediolanum are both above 24,000 yet i see no imperial palace in the construction page...do i have to upgrade all cities in italy/sicily to imperial palace first before i can do it anywhere else?

    2) the north african coastal provinces all have imitation legionary shields but i see no option to build them and i've built republican legionary barracks in all of them...do i need to build imperial barracks to get those units?

Please read the RTW manual and The README for SPQR. You should always read the README of a Mod, the game is changed too much not to

I did read the manual and the readme, they did not answer my questions. All I found about imitation legions was this:

"66. Added Eastern, Greek, Numidian Legionaries to Their respective provinces for Roman Players. Do not be fooled these units are NOT as good as Italian Legionaries, but better than Auxillia. Black shield Icon marked provinces where they can be recruited."

This does not tell me when I can begin recruiting them, what level settlement I need, or what kind of barracks I need.

Also, neither the manual nor the readme mentioned anything about why I can't build imperial palaces outside of Italy although I have settlements > 24,000 people.

Anyone want to point me in the right direction?

u need huge_city (24K+), marian_reforms and royal_barracks to recruit Eastern, Greek, Numidian Legionaries in their respective provinces

    Only romans can recruit them

u need large_city (12K+) and great_forum in every city u want to build imperial_palace. u can do it in any province

u need to play either carthaginian, eastern, parthia, egyptian, greek or roman faction to be able to build it.

The great_forum has been known since 1.1 rtw That is what is needed to upgrade to imperial. That was my point. its in the Manual somewhere.

You were right on the Readme, I thought I mentioned Imperial Palace in it for the none roman legionaries. Still if you scroll in this Forum you will find its been asked a few times. ;-)
