Try the tutorial it shows the basic formation of your army on low scale. Archers first, then infantry, and then cavalry and retreat the archers ofcourse when enemies get near.

Re: need help with battle strategy
I found that when I was first starting out I could handle myself much more effectively when in defense.
First load up a battle on a flat surface, I recommend "Grassy Plains". Give yourself an army of 4 units of cheep spear men, 4 units of archers and a general's unit of calvary. Give the enemy only infantry and archers.
Put yourself on defense and load up the battle, set up your spearmen in a line with a line of archers behind them and your general behind them. Let your enemy come to you, once they engage your spearmen wait a few minutes and "loop" your general behind them. Have him charge into their backs and watch them run. Most plans you will use as a beginner will be variations of this.

Yes as Feliks said the hammer and anvil tactic will always work well no matter what level you play on with whatever faction. Also eventually try to work on using terrain to charge downhill, or to have a large force hiding in the woods come and flank once the enemy has passed them. There are a lot of possibilities, so try out the custom battle to work out new tactics.
