When I posted, I meant, who likes those alternative, rock goth, new age and garage rock. Example: Joy Division, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, R.E.M., Tears for Fears, Happy Mondays, etc.

If you also like the new revivalist bands, such as The Strokes, The Libertines, Dirty Pretty Things, Babyshambles, please say it.

You can also post more bands of the ones not mentioned, so that we learn even more with each others.

Hope you like this lame idea.

If you listen carefully to 80s bands you'll like... there are many CD's out there featuring lots of them, some even remembering those old times saying some rubbish words to captivate...

Well, when I speak of 80s music it's not the rap, lol (but I like some classics, that usually I don't remember the name :hmmm. I speak of those new age, alternative-like, indie and post-punk bands... Some of them, like The Cure, you must recognize, or that mytical music of Joy Division: Love will tears us apart.

I sugest you Joy Division if you like depressing stuff: Ian Curtis (the vocalist) hanged himself, and before that, he watched a video about a nazi thing and listened to Iggy Pop's album "Idiot".

If you like some goth stuff, that unusually ins't happy, lol, you may listen to The Cure (it's really the cure to some people, lol)
I think if you also listen to Tears for Fears, you may like it.

A film about this 80s scene is 24 hour Party People: I didn't watch it, but people say it's great.

Exactly. For me, the 80s were the nadir of music...The only good period during the 80s movement was the early 80s (1980 to around 1983-4). The only bands that were able to survive were the metal bands.

I'm not too into glam rock or punk.

Oh, by the way, I think you're going to make great friends with Atheist Peace and God God especially loves Joy Division.

well, the 80's were part of the best years of music (1970-1995). the mainstream was pretty stupid, but it was a hell of a lot better than today's mainstream, and the underground music was simply amazing: thrash metal, 'real' grunge, prog rock, funk and much more. it's too bad the 80's are mostly remembered for bands like bon jovi.

I agree with parts. I still say the mainstream was actually worse than it is now, but thats just an opinion

Since I treat grunge with some kind of special reverence, I'll be specific. In the 90s the bands that were important to the scene in the 80s were the same bands. In the 80s, it was all about the younger guys finding their roots in the scene. The 80s grunge was not as good musically, and thats all there is to it. By the 90s, those writers who were part of grunge in the 80s were still there. It wasn't until 89 at the earliest that their music reached maturity. The 80s was just its gestation period. Look at the major, and I mean major grunge releases. Dirt. Ten. Badmotorfinger. Superfuzz Big Muff (OK, yes, it was 88, but it didn't hit big till the 1990 re-release). They were all post or during 1990. The simple fact is, Grunge, in terms of musical talent, reached its zenith in the period 1990-1996. Thats when the music was mature, and the sound distinguished from its Punk roots. While there were some good efforts in the 80s, it wasn't very tight, or well written as the band members could manage later on.

when I said "real grunge" i meant early grunge. I didn't say it was better then later grunge, but I simply stated that there was grunge in the 80's, to counter the people who said the 80's music sucks.

    80's New Wave, baby.

I love it all, and yes, I am aware that none of it has any redeeming musical value except for nostalgia.

AC/DC baby. Though they admittedly reached their peak very early in the 80s ... like 80/81. G'NR of course too. Besides the hard rock scene, I only like 80s music for what it set up in the 90s (grunge, Britpop, etc.) and not (shudder) the glam rock and punk that dominated the late 80s.

I agree with you guys. I love 'em. It's really sad that Curtis died when he was so young... Not speakin' more of the eighties but of early rock, lol: Do you also like the Doors? And Jerry and the Pacemakers?
Jerry and the Pacemakers sounds to me like the Beatles sometimes.
