Default Does anyone play as the Rebels?

I know this is an odd question, but I nearly always mod my strat file so that the rebels are playable so that I can update myself on map changes within mods (adding extra provinces to bigmap, etc). Recently I decided to play a few turns as the "force of chaos" and order my heretics, brigands and pirates around in a strategic manner. It required some micromanagement, and the economy was terrible (no trade rights) but hey, whats the worst that can happen when you raise taxes - a city might rebel? Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has seriously played the rebel/slave factionas a real campaign.

Err if i try to play as rebels i get a ctd.....and also how would you recruit heretics, units, and ships?? Also how will you get family members because rebels aren't a real faction. And also how would you order heretics and rebel armies around??? How did you achive this??
I'm really too lazy to add a pic (for now) so just settle on this you swine And if you find my posts helpful or funny add +rep

You can play as the rebels? Well, I already knew that you can play as them, but always thought that the game would crash or something.

Wow, I got to try that!

Well I just experimented a little and played for about five years (10 turns) to see if it would work, and I was able to destroy Scotland in that time. I also built buildings, hired mercs, and had two heretics that I could control spawn. I gained Scotland's remaining units when I defeated them, and I had several new armies spawn (from ai factions?) however the game did crash to desktop after about ten turns... my guess is that it could be related to the date, as I start my game from 1075 rather than 1080, but I do not know. I am using the Long road mod in this experiment, and in that one you can recruit generals, so I would occaissionaly be able to add new generals to my family. The family tree is blocked - you can't look at it, and the turns take a long time (you're being attacked by a dozen enemies at once). I enjoyed playing as the "force of chaos" and unifying my vast and diverse rebel armies to fight the "real" factions, but the economy did suck. I was at about -40000 on the first turn. I added money through the cheat, but if you gave the faction about a million or so to start and built the infrastructure they might be viable once a number of their troops were dead (lower upkeep). Anyway I started this post to find out if anyone else has done this... I remember playing as the rebels in Rome Total war as well... in that game you could use your rebel diplomats to negotiate for peace.
I changed the desc_strat file to include them in playable factions list (the first and most basic mod you'll learn!)

Is it possible to recruit armies, while playing as rebels? As far as I remember, you may onlu build buildings, you are not allowed to recruit anything..

If your not allowed to train soldiers, then that's when cheat codes comes in handy. "create_unit character/settlement unit-name" etc

In my version I was able to train soldiers at antioch and recruit generals from any castle. I could also hire mercs. I don't know if I could recruit after building barracks, as the game crashed and I haven't retested the theory.

I played as the rebels in the main medieval 2 campaign and all four kingdoms campaigns. I really enjoyed it actually.I managed to take every map. It was somthing different than playing as an organized "real" faction. However I'm trying to figure out how to still play as the rebels in custom battle.

What is the appeal of this? It seems pretty "gamey" rather than part of the game. Do you control every rebel faction or just the rebels of a specific region?

I was under the impression that the rebels were like the Mongols and Timurids, in that attempting to play as them would cause the game to crash... I guess I'm wrong.

Yep, I hav never fought in such a case of total war, not bein able to train agents is kinda a thought.....then you get all the brigads that spawn when you finish your turn.....you cant save em all. Heretics and witchs move around like inquisitors so they can get annoying as do priests. Havin no family tree is also difrent.

Yes I tried as the rebels a few times. It's pretty cumbersome in the beginning when you control most of the regions on the map and everyone attacks you all over the place. I usually let most of my settlements get taken except a few strongholds, from where I eventually spread again. One cool thing about playing with rebels is that your units vary with regions.

Playing as the rebels facken sucks, About 2 or 3 turns in your fighting 20 battles a turn, it gets annoying very quickly, even auto resolving takes forever -_-
