    Icon5 What Rome: Total War Faction/s are you descended from?

    I think I am most descended from the Illyrians, Romans, the Gaels , Britons,Germania, and the Greeks, all in that order.

    I will include such mods like Rome: Total Realism and Europa Barbarorum in this category too. I didn't make this a poll because it would be too much like my other thread, called "What is your favorite Rome: Total War Faction?"

    Are you talking about what people lived your ancestors lands at the time of R:TW? Or what people you descend from, because it's a lot different. The current french people descend from the franks, which is germanic. The germans and the spanish also descend from the franks, the british descend from the saxons (again germanic), and italians descend from the lombards (also germanic). So most of western europe would descend from the germans in R:TW. The only countries which doesn't descend from the germans would be the irish (celts/britons), the bretons (same), the welsh (also britons) and the scottish (britons and picts).

    not so much, since lombard influence was mainly in northern part. the southern lombard ducates were of few influence; if you see a language map of spoken dialects you will see it clearly. also, since ostrogoths get italy, the conquerors get the abitude of a sort of apartheid against roman local citizens.
    however, i'm from a city near taranto (Tarentum), and is funny to see mow many different peoples conquered or raided that piece of land. i suppose that conquering soldiers like to get fun after victories, and a common way trough history is to rape the women of defeated, that is a possible way of creating new descent, if we look at it so.

    it's a LOOOOOOOOOONG story of conquers, conquers, conquers.....

    1- Belisarius conquered the zone and re-populed it with greeks (that i doubt they were from hellas);
    2- Totila and his goths conquered the city, murdered lot of them, and estabilished here;
    3- Byzantine general Narses reconquered it killing the goths;
    4- Lombards of Alboino decided to conquer this city because they feel bored ;
    5- Constans II Heraclius sent the byzantine fleet in 663, and renconquered the city and almost all the region.
    6- The lombard Grimoald disliked it and with his son Garibald in 686 reconquered the land when the byz fleet get home;
    7- Then berbers ask what they were doing in Lybia and one of them said "let's raid the coast of Tarentum" the other said "yeeee!!". they actually spent the saturday evening in raiding it, from around 700 to 1000, once they get bored.
    8- Saracens then think that they could do better, and around 840 they conquered the city and the hinterland, estabilishing an emirate, and making the city an important naval base. since saracents were great merchants, they decided to improve their skills by selling as slave the local population.
    9- Byzantines, however, profoundly disliked that, and so in 880 they finally took the city. the byz general Apostyppes then ordered that all the latin-lombard originary people should be alternatively killed or sell into slavery, since almost all of them embraced muslim faith, and so called for new greeks to settle the territory. i guess those new greeks were not of the purest hellenic blood, however.
    10- Saracens, then, decided to put an end and razed the territory in 927. the city was destroyed almost entirely, the citizens killed; the few survivors spread in the nearby hills (30 km away), impervious and forestal land, that had some byz tower on the top of the hill as outpost. then they founded my city
    11- in 967 Nikeforos II Focas refounded the city from his ruins, waving new settlers from greece.
    12- Could then saracens keep their hands on other matters? of course not. in 977 they conquered the city again, killing people and burning it.
    13- Otto of Saxony decided then to enter in theis funny game of taking and losing the city, and get it.
    14- Saracens, however, were disappointed and crushed the germanic imperial army.
    15- the population or what could compose it ask them protection to Norman mercenaries. i'd like to remember that they came from normandy, but they are mainly settled vikings. so normans came with Robert the Guiscard.finally they get the peace for a century and more.
    16- Suebian germans of the hoenstaufen house, by several dynastical complications, get the throne around 1200 because the then ruling norman - the Altavilla - were ended. Friedrich II "the great" grew and was educated in sicily and loved the south italian lands, feeling more an italian than a german, also because his knowledge of german was few. on the other hand, he could speak arab, and get in the holy land for a crusade but for the first time get jerusalem not by war, but by a two-weeks continuative talks, by diplomacy. bound with friendship, he used to have a saracen bodyguard, and allowed they to settle freely where? in the territory nearby taranto, obviously
    17- After the svevian defeat on 1266, french of Anjou get the land. the prince Phillippe d'Anjou, among other things, established a true colony on the greek settlement, officially founding my city, tracing the walls, and allowing people to not pay taxes if they were settlers. well, you could imagine the amount of various people who came.
    18- However, the franch Anjou not lasted much; defeated in 1399, the local noble Giovanni Antonio degli Orsini del Balzo took power and erected a castle in my city.
    19- Since locals could not resist the mighty power of Aragon, they take the land in 1465, and bring there lot of mercenaries and soldiers in order to defend it.
    20- Greeks, albanians and other peoples, after the fall of byzantium and the spreading of turksin the baklan peninsula, gone in south italy, establishing villages in some cases (today they exist and are language minorities) or, in most cases, mixing with population.
    21- french enjoyed the role gameplay and decided to crush Aragon not on their land but in mine, so Charles VIII get it in 1495.
    22- Since aragon kiled it, in 1497 reconquered it again.
    23- Conquered by spaniards on 1504 who were in war against Aragon, in 1544 Turks tried - unsuccessfully to conquer it. Spaniards keep it with few problems, and there were no dramatin hanges when the kingdom of naples switches in Haupsburg hands for some years.
    24- With the french revolution, they get it and establish a former independent kingdom
    25- when Bourbons come back, they were kicked away by other italians - for the first time in more than 1000 years, i would like to say - with Garibaldi's expedition of the 1000.
    26- the only noticeable thing is the wwii, when british landed and occupied the zone.

    now, i've to say to you: my mother is from my city from several generations - by memory i could trace mothern ancestors more or less around the half of XVIII century. the surname of my mother is typical of my city, and is a common surname in my city at least since 1500.
    my father trouble things a bit. He is slim, 1,86 height, has natural blonde hair as the smilies here and light blue eyes, and looks like a swedish. my paternal grandmother is like him, but just 1,50 tall, and my paternal grandpa is really similar to my father, but he cames from sicily - black-brown hairs and green eyes.

    IN conclusion, i guess i should have some nordic blood in my veins, together with italic one of some "mediterranean" descent, or maybe french... in my town the local dialect has still several french words, and i could understand it easily, but some of them comes from greek. what can i do?

    Yeah, but don't most of them also have Gallic descent? I mean, I think the Gauls were a majority ethnic group in France even in the Middle Ages.

    Of cause, I didn't say that (well I didn't mean that), but there are more frankish blood in frenchmen than romano-celtic.
