Default Why Do You Feel the Need to Believe in (Insert Deity/Higher Power Here)?

In the course of my -as yet short- adult life I have gotten into many debates over religion. Predominantly this has been with people of the Christian persuasion as these are the people to whom I have had the best access. These debates more often than not degenerate into irrational arguements based more on emotion and conviction than any substance of logic or reason.

I would like to change this. I hope to do so through a step-by-step process starting here with a question I have never asked a person of faith.

Why do you feel the need to believe in God?

This is purely for my own education, to better understand my fellow Human beings. I would kindly ask my fellow atheists to restrict their comments so as not to discourage the deists from posting. I don't intend for this to be a debate or argument so much as a chance for me to learn the Why of it all.

    Thanks a bunch!
The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.

Why not believe in a god? I find it hard to believe everything was made from random chance. Sure, that brings on "where'd god come from" or something, but it makes everything more sensible to have someone doing it all, than nothing.
