defensive mode - what is the difference

Hi, does anyone know what is the advantage of defensive mode except that the unit with turned that mode on not chase anyone and therefore do not break the formation?

in medieval II halberd militias, etc...will only lower their halberds, pikes, or whatsoever in defensive mode

if you turn their special ability on in defensive mode the first 3 ranks lower their weapons
if you turn their special ability off in defensive mode the first 2 ranks lower their weapons

if you turn the defensive mode off the units will stand there without lowered pikes/halberds
