Default Let's see who is the most generous....

Looks like the Americans blow the Europeans out of the water. I was reading an article in the economist regarding how the growing income of British families is not matched by eleemosynary activity.

Unfortunately it appears as though France is at the bottom. To be fair, Americans have lower taxes, so they have more free money.

There are a few reasons for this:

    - Americans are generous people

    - Americans have low taxes so instead of the government giving money to the poor, it is the people who do it

    - Many Americans are deeply religious (aka fanatics) and donate to their church charities.

    - American rich (such as Bill Gates) have so much money they don't need they give it away

Although the second graph is the interesting one. I wonder what that can be attributed to as I'm no expert on Britain

The difference is that in "socialist" Europe it's the government who takes care of the needed, in America this is left to charity.

And, as said before, "charity" also includes all those evangelical Churches.

Now let's look at how much those "generous" Americans give to foreign charities:

What is the point of showing this? I posted a graph showing to what extent people were charitable. What does it matter what sort of charities they donate to?

Wow leave it to this place to turn a thread about charity into another "America is evil" thread. A mod should sticky a thread and call it " Americans Eat Babies " and their everyone can vent their ridiculous claims there.

Trolls aside (and I'm NOT talking of Erik here. Despite the fact his figures show public donations, not private ones, afaik...), most people would agree it's a rather interesting fact that only 3% of US private charity finds its way out of the borders of the richest nation on earth...

ok. I'm in a generous mood, so I'll spell the obvious point again:
    1)richest nation.
2)keeps most of its private donations, which are plentiful, to itself.
    see the contradiction?

thank you so much for gracing this thread with your generosity we are all enlightened by the shining beacon that is your immaculate wisdom... gimme abreak

There private donations they can go where they want, does that make Americans selfish, no. America is not all a land of sunshine and farts, we have problems to and like everyone on the planet like to fix things in are own backyard.

I never understood why foreign aid became this measuring stick for a nations penis size. Personally I'm not convinced just giving handouts to other nations is a good way to go about doing things in the first place. I don't think the US spending an extra 50 billion or whatever to bring it in line with the UN "standard" of .7% is going to make a very noticeable difference in the world.

Your right, its not. Look at the wealth throw at Africa and its continued condition. Aid needs to come with strings attached and requirements to be met as far as goverments go. How much money was wasted away in Africa during 80s/90s that did little to impact the average person who actually NEEDED it?

Now let's look at how much those "generous" Americans give to foreign charities:
    From bottom of page:
"The entry does not cover other official flows (OOF) or private flows." Per capita figures expressed per 1 population."

So you're saying that before the thought of giving to charity hits europeans, they stop and say "hey wait a minute, my government takes care of that already so i shouldn't even consider it" Thanks glad we cleared that up. Which explains why the OP's graph is the way it is. All you're saying is the people in america are more generous than the people of europe. You just proved his point. thanks for trying, you still lose.

If God were a man he'd be me.

At first i simply observed. But i found that without investment in others, life serves no purpose.
