Looks very good. Any names in this list that are "fake" or "bad" (speaking of names you added from descr_strat.txt file?... We may be able to change the name.txt file so that some of these names show up in-game with real names...

i.e., {badfrenchname}goodfrenchname ...so that when the game assigns "badfrenchname", "goodfrenchname" is what you will see in the game.

Yup, I've already done that with {Poitevin} le Poitevin and {Lanfrank}Lanfranc, the other obvious contender for a quick fix is Remon. I've also used this method to display names with french characters and accents etc.

I haven't checked yet, but I'd expect Remon to appear on the Spanish list so I've left it alone for now.

Can you look through this new list by Johan, and add any names you think should be added (since your list is the larger one)?

Also, I think we should eliminate "descriptive" bynames such as "l'Affable" and "le Noir", etc. I like them, but unfortunately the game will use them as family names that are passed on to their children. That's not very realistic. I have to delete such names from my HRE list too ("der Bär", etc.). What do you guys think?

This appears to be the same as Johans last list that is already incorporated in the names - except for the descriptive nicknames that I removed as I think that they should only be included if they were subsequently adopted as family names ie Curthose for the English, le Breton for the French etc.

Agree with you on that rouge. These can easily be incorporated into the traits files as epithets. In fact it is possible to tailor nicknames to appear for the relevant factions so you could have a Lionheart for the English or the Fowler for the HRE etc. It might be a good project to do once the names are sorted out.

Ok, I'll consider the French done then. If anyone sees any names missing that should be included, they can always post them here and I'll add them if we need to.

    Thanks

    de Rougemont,

In the names list, could you please check if these names are displayed correctly:
    de l Etang
    la Chèvre

I think they need to be changed to de l_Etang and la Chevre in this txt file.

Question is it necessary to add the apostroph after several names (d') in FR_descr_names.txt and FR_descr_names_lookup.txt, or is this irrelevant because of the FF_names.txt file?

The actual appearance of the name in game is determined in the names.txt file that gets converted to a strings.bin file.

If you download the CNP mod you get all the names for all the completed factions and a names.txt.strings.bin file included.

Very nice work! I've noticed a few glitches:

The French for Fulkes is Fulcon (or Foulques, Foulque).
The French for Evrart is Evrard. The French for Tancred is Tancrède.
Benoît is spelled with a ^ on the i
Clément is spelled with a é not e
Gérard is spelled with a é not e
René is spelled with a é not e

It seems that Arnolf is the usual English transcription for the French Arnoul (and German Arnulf). Baudoin is the usual French for Baldwin.
Dreux is as far as I know a surname, not a firstname.
Jehanin appears to be a nickname for Jean and Jehan rather than a real firstname.
Perrin appears to be a nickname for Pierre and a modern surname, not a firstname (as opposed to Perrine)

Junian might be better than Junian in the context, as Junien is the modern French for the Occitan firstname of the time period (anyway the Latin was Junianus).
The only French reference I found on Odo was a Start Trek character , looks like Odon might be a better choice (though it appears to have the same German origin).
    Philipp is English not French
Remond or Rémond appears to have more references than Remon.

A few common French medieval firstname you might have overlooked :
Martin, Gervais (as the bishop who crowned Philippe Ier), Tanneguy (or Tanguy, more modern, one of the military advisors of Charles VII), Géraud (as several Armagnac counts and a bishop), Raimond (alternative to Raymond in the south of France)

    Women firstnames:
    Adèle not Adele
    Agnès not Agnes
Bertrade is the French for Bertrada
Claire is the French for Clare
Margot is usually a nickname for Margueritte
Mathilde usually has Mahaut for a nickname, the most famous being Mahaut d'Artois, former wife of Otto (Otton) of Burgundy.

I found no references for Gisela

    Noble names
Beauharnais, Pompadour are modern (understand 17th/18th century) noble names/families
Orléans should be spelled with a é not e
The noble house of Albi (d'Albi) was also called Trencavel, they were the victims of the Albigensian crusade

    Trivia:
Most firstname with a German etymology can be written either with the suffix -aud or -ault ie Gibaud/Gibault, Foucaud/foucault, the former being a little more common than the later, but the latter spelling "looks" a little more medieval.

    Nemovadit,

Really appreciate your critique of the French list, particularly the punctuation/accenting of the names. I think the surnames are pretty good but there are still a number of vanilla names and typos in the first names list. If you have an opportunity to check the french list in whole, please do so!

    Onto your points in detail;

Foulques is included in the name list and I agree is better than Fulkes – I think that was a vanilla name – and I have no objection to Fulkes removal.
Disagree with you on Evrart. The medieval spelling tends to be Evrart rather than Evrard (4 to 1 in the Paris Census of 1423) and I think that spelling is more period authentic, although both are correct.
I agree with all your other first name typo corrections.
Arnolf and Arnoul are both listed in the names, agree that Arnoul is better and Arnoulet/Arnould would also be acceptable. Arnolf can go.
Baudouin is already listed and again I agree it is better than Baldwin – the English version can go.
Dreux is more common as a surname as you say but I included it as it was the family name of the Counts of Dammartin & Mello – in fact from the 10th to 12th century virtually all the male line were called Dreux so that’s why it made my list. I think it’s worth retaining, but Dreue would be a more common replacement name.
Jehanin is the diminuative of Jehan as you point out, but it is listed so often as a name in its own right in the medieval census’ that I think it warrants listing. The same with Perrin as a diminuative of Pierre – and is the 8th most common name in the 1423 census. I quite like having some of the more common diminuatives listed with the full name (providing they are period authentic), but I’m open to persuasion if others think they should go? Colin is also in, which is a diminuative of Nicolas.
I found both Junien and Junian and don’t mind which version stays in.
I think Odo was another vanilla name and agree that Odon or preferably Oudin/Oudinet are much better.
I am happy if any of your suggested additional names are added, they would all be good additions.

Agree with all your female name corrections and I am quite happy if Mathilde is replaced with Mahaut or Mahault, either spelling being acceptable for the period. Gisela was taken from a French medieval genealogy, so although it was not a common name (couldn’t find it in any of the medieval censuses) I am happy for it to remain as it is period authentic.

I disagree with you on the noble surnames. As you correctly point out Beauharnais and Pompadour are both closely linked to the 19th and 18th centuries, with Eugene & Josephine de Beauharnais (Napoleonic era) and Madame Pompadour respectively, but the names are considerably older. The Beauharnais family dates back to at least the 14th century (Guillame Beauharnais, Seigneur of Miramion and la Chaussee) and I found a number of references to the name/title during the Hundred Years War, including Jean de Beauharnais (also spelt Beauharnays) who fought at the siege of Orleans and was a companion of Joan of Arc. The Pompadour name was not quite as renowned, but can be found in the late 14th century – the Seigneur de Pompadour was taken prisoner by the English at Poitiers (see Froissart’s Chronicles) and Gafridus de Pompadour was a Bishop of Perigeux in the late 15th century.

Really appreciate your comments and corrections and if you get a chance to check the full list please do so.
And gentlemen in England, now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
