    Default Phalanx Formation

    Forgive me for not knowing every mod in existence for RTW but are there any mods out there that have the correct early phalanx formation?

    The twelve foot long pike and small round shield combo we see of the Phalangites and such in the XGM and RTW is the later, Alexander the Great version.

    I'm talking about the early phalanx, where hoplites would form a shield wall with their large bronze shields and stick their 7-9 foot long spears out over top. This more known as the Doru spear and the phalanx formation with that while the longer pike version is called the Sarissa.

    So, any help?

    HI,
    you must change in descr_model_battle the animation:
    1.Find your unit
    2.Change in the second line(i am not sure whether its the second line or not)
    from: fs_spearman, fs_swordsman
    to the following:fs_s1_hoplite
    this is the overhand animation

    Alright, so they'll look like they're doing it but what I'm talking about is the actual formation...like a formation switch that acts just as you would click for the phalanx and other unit abilities.

    Just any Doru phalanx formation..doesnt matter..I was just asking if there were any mods that had it.

    fs_s1_hoplite
    It doesn't exist in vanilla.

    Change

    fs_spearman, fs_swordsman

    to

    fs_javelinman, fs_swordsman

    they will battle and hold a phalanx in overhead formation. they won't walk like that though, sadly.

    Extended Greek Mod changes everything called a hoplite over to an overhand fighting animation. IIRC, they walk that way too.

    Alright, XGM doesn't exactly make the real phalanx as it was, for that I believe you need to create a new unit skeleton and change the majority of animations for the short_pike phalanx guys, then just add phalanx formation to a unit and give it the short_pike attribute.
    This should work relatively well, but can be improved as seen fit (if you know how to edit the animations which is, for your luck, quite easy).
    And also, you need to link the new skeleton in descr_model_battle to your unit.

    As an alternative solution, you could use the shield wall formation.
