Free upkeep units?

Ok I was reading and saw someone writing about having militia units in your cities free of upkeep. I think I remember the game telling me something similar, but it never said how I know how many free upkeep units I can have. So how do I know how many free upkeep units I can have in each of my cities/castles? I didn't see it on the city info scroll thingy.

Right click your walls, it will tell you the amount. Also the tourney field provides free upkeep in castles.

I think the tourney field free upkeep is broken in v1.1.

If my walls support 3 free units, does that count a Geneal too? Like if I have 1 General and 3 spear militia, does my general cost money still? Or is a General always free in a city?

EDIT: Also: Does that mean that I can only have 3 free MILITIA units, or any 3 free units in that city?

Doesn't support the upkeep for your generals (they will always cost you money). And free upkeep ONLY applies to militia units. You cannot place, for example, Chivalric Knights in a city and have free upkeep for them.

You can have free upkeep of units with the free upkeep trait AND that you can build in that place. As you can't build militia in castles (using vanilla), no free upkeep in castles.

besides, if you look in a city screen, under army you will see the "free upkeep" units with a blue background instead of the regular grey
