Best Guitarists

I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread where you could just list who you thought to be the top 5 best guitarists and then talk about it. good idea?

heres mine-

#1 George Harrison
#2 Eric Clapton
#3 Jimi Hendrix
#4 Pete Drake
#5 Stevie Rae Vaughn

#1 Michael Angelo Batio (a dude who can play this deserves my respect)
#2 Jimi Hendrix (Do I really have to tell you the story?)
#3 Eric Clapton (The dude never gets old!)
#4 Kirk Hammet (You can bash Metallica, but you can't say their solo's wizard didn't throw some huge and powerfull solos before the Load era)
#5 Carlos Santana (not the greatest fan of his music, but I know a good guitarist wherever I see him)

mmmm.....tough to decide, here's how my top five round out.

1 Jimi Hendrix (my sister once thought someone was singing, it was his guitar)
2 Stevie Ray Vaughn (amazing blues rocker, so sweet)
3 Jimmy Page (self explanatory, dazed and confused)
4 Jerry Garcia (capable of a 1.5 hour solo in the middle of a song while only having four fingers on his picking hand)
5 Eric Clapton ("the dude never gets old") amen to that...

I think we had one of these about a week ago...

Yeah, we had one of these not too long ago.... My list of top five, in no specific order:

1) Jerry Garcia - Master of Improvisation during a song, all I can say is, "wow". The Music Never Stopped, anyone?
2) Eric Clapton- I shouldn't even elaborate on this one
3) George Harrison - His guitar work, especially slide guitar (Check out Live In Japan) is breathtaking. Very laid back too.
4) Robert Fripp - As Nihil has said " a highly creative and influential guitarist with great technichal proficiency and a style somewhere between the white-hot LSD-powered raw expressiveness of Hendrix and a very English, disciplined, classical kind of refined musicianship
5) Jimi Hendrix

Dammit, my sentences are so long. I really get over-excited when I'm reviewing.

The only problem with I have with Garcia is that I have heard way too much of him. My brother is obsessed with the Grateful Dead and he plays them 24-7.

Only one mention so far of Jimmy Page in this thread? What's with that? Only the greatest riff-writer ever...

That's why I like listening to the Grateful Dead selectively. It makes the experience so much better.

Edit: I give Page props for a great improv player, and great overall. I just don't listen to much of his material with the Zep.

My fav guitarists are James Root and Mick Thomson of Slipknot, who are only the epiphany of perfect harmony. Then I am biased as I am a maggot, stay (sic)

Um David Gilmore anyone? He should be in the list somewhere
