Default Kids in US and UK not doing too well...

This was reported on yesterday; UNICEF studied the welfare of children in industrialized nations and ranked them. The US and UK faired the worst, while countries like the Czech Republic faired better.

    What do you think?

    There is no such country

Here is the result from the UNICEF source

The raport is pretty long and much more detailed.

Its pretty sad that the UK and US children are doing worse than kids in a country that doesnt exist. Do you mean Czech Republic or Slovakia?

Lol, it seems like Asian kids are deprived since there is no Asian country reflected on the chart. Perhaps we Asians should start learning Dutch instead of English. Fortunately we at TWC are mainly adults otherwise posting in English is unhealthy.

Do the UK and US children expect more of their lives?

Anyone care to tell me why this is so full of surprises? Read about this this morning in a free newspaper in the bus on the way to school. We Finns did pretty well, although we had some very low places too! (Well, one low and one on the worse side).

You think it is bad now? Wait untill the Eminem and 50 Cent idolising generation become parents themselves.

Interesting though, is the subjective wellbeing score for US children. Very interesting.

I'm sure the parents of the 60's generation thought the same thing about their kids. But I still agree with you...
When I drop my kid off at school, I sometimes hear hardcore rap blasting from an Escalade with tinted windows and spinners...then a six year old hops out. To me that's a little troubling.

Somehow I thought I would be surprised Greece did better (even if slightly) than Germany (the two countries that define me). I'm not. Even though I do not wish to return to Greece anytime in the near future, life is indeed partly better there. The only thing I have a hard time to believe is the educational well being of children in those two countries. While Greece offers free education, schools and universities do not really shine with excellence. At least they didn't when I was at school there. So, I think I have to find out what exactly they mean with "educational well being". And what is a "child". Time to read that report I guess.

I wonder why countries with many 'talented' youngsters do not guarantee the progressiveness of the countries themselves. My country Indonesia for example we won worldwide tournaments like Physic Olympic a few times, but our country remains as backward as before in comparison to developed countries.

By the way, I heard children in Europe have always received harder curriculum than children in USA. However, I wonder why USA seem to produce more 'geniuses'?

It might be because we have a huge population...and lots of competitions which discover these "geniuses".

I think in America the differences between schools are much larger than in Europe.
The average school in America is probably a lot worst than the average school in Europe, but America has more exceptionally good schools for the rich kids.

and our universities are some of the best in the world. as mentioned, primary education, on the other hand, is generally pretty bad compared to Europe.

Are all your universities that good, or just the famous ones?

well, obviously there are some pretty bad colleges/universities in the US. But for the most part, even the non-famous ones are generally good.

America has never had a good primary education, we do have excellent universities though. Plus the USA has done a great job of recruiting talented people to come to the USA.

If it wasn't for massive parent involvement, our schools would be in much worse shape then they are. My wife and I are required to log 90 hours of time helping my daughters class.
