Didn´t found any thread with this, so I will open one
What is your Favorite fantasy book? Tell us here in this thread.
    Discussing is allowed and wanted.

My personal favorite is: The Elric of Melniboné Saga by Michael Moorcock
I like it way more than LOTR and that means something. It´s more serious and goes deeper. Also, there is no clear "Good and Evil" scenario.

Tales of the Otori, by Lian Hearn. Ninjas with magic powers, fantasy medieval-Japan world, samurai, beautiful Japanese aesthetic in writing.

The Malazan Books by Stephen Erikson. Since his very "gray" world (the is no real "good" or "evil", except maybe one or two characters) I am having trouble reading other high fantasy novels.

Ill toss my agreement with Martin as well, Im also a sucker for RA Salavatore's books...yeah its too often over the top with the action and cheesy but he creates interesting characters like Pikel and Cadderly. Goodkind's books however should be burnt Never have I read such horrible dialog and uninspiring storytelling. A Sword of Truth book will almost always involve one character being kidnapped, tortured and in the end a minor evil character will see the light and aid Richard. *yawnfest*

Also big fan of Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends series, grew up on them and actually the first fantasy novels I read...yes Im one of the few who can admit (atleast honestly) that Tolkien wasnt my first exposure to fantasy. For years as a kid I was torn between who Id want to be, Sturm...the brave knight standing on the battlement facing Kitara and a dragon alone dying heroically or Raistlin so heartless to destroy anything that stood in his way but yet prone to bizarre acts of compassion with the TRULY helpless.

Also Neil Gaiman, from American Gods, Stardust, Coraline all absolutely great and anyone who is/was a comic fan should know his Sandman series...absolutely brilliant. He and Pratchett wrote Good Omens which is just hilarious (an angel and a demon having too much fun on earth decide to screw with judgement day by 'misplacing' the anti-christ) and WELL worth reading.

Arrrghhh! Ahoy thar, landlubbers and lubbers o' da land!!
Da Captain be luvin' all dar 'old skool' fantasy in dis dar order:

    1) Robert E. Howard. Not just fer Conan, but fer awe his unique charcaters, such 'as Solomon Kane, tha Puritan whot fights evil. Twas a dark day when Howard comitted suiciede o'er the death of 'is mother.

    2) A series o' obscure books, whot started in the late 60's called "Gor". Highly imaginative, but sadly blacklisted now, as it has "sensitive" content, such as slaves, bloodletting an' scantilly clad waifs.

    3) Like dar original poster, Morcock be old skool, an' fantaboolous, me thinks.

    4) Arrrrghhh, an' if da Captain really must choose sumptin' more nooer, then Oi guess Oi'll go fer thar Dragonlance originals, though they even be old by now too.

Time ta draw moi cutlass an pistol, cause the Captain be attacked fer thar next statements.
Garrrr!!! Oi hates Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan an' Arrr Arrr Martin!!!!! Oi uses thar pages from deir books ta wipe me hairy pirate arse with!!!\
Uh oh.... Whot is ye all lookin' angry fer??? Time fer da Captain ta make a quick getaway.....Run, crew! Back ta tha Ruddy Waif an' make fer da high seas!!!!

Fantasy, excluding sci-fi? Discworld of Pratchett, far and away. Full of rich characters, amazing and fantastic plots, wonderful evocativeness, and a nice satire on life; and its becoming a little darker, too, in Thud!. Wonderful series, and to be recommended to all.

It should be pretty obvious, given my username, that my favorite fantasy books are those of Terry Goodkind. His "Sword of Truth" books are just fantastic.

Favourite fantasy would be "Romance of The Three Kingdoms" by Luo Guanzhong, more historical fantasy though.

The Divine Comedy also. It isn't fantasy per se but its isn't excatly fact now is it.
