Default (Moved to Vote) Curia Initiative Proposal - Medal Award Proposal

Citizens of the Curia, I lave long kept my visions and ideas of how the community should evolve to a select, few, trusted friends. Today I have decided that I will now present one of my ideas. Currently there is much talk about modding awards and things the Curia can administrate and thus I would like the Medals system which was discussed in Sulla’s time to finally get some coverage and possibly push for its implementation through this administrative body.

I will, in as simple a manner as possible, present my Proposal –

Medals are awards separate from Rank and other status and can me temporarily or permanently awarded to any member of the community.

    • A certain amount of Medals are to be visible much like the current reputation and citizen rank systems.

    • Medals are to be created by the Curia and awarded/stripped by the curia.

    • Medals are to take the names of Artifacts such as –

    1. 10,000 Posts – Golden Laurel
    2. 5,000 Posts – Silver Laurel
    3. Best Skinner – Da Vinci’s Brush
    4. Senatorial Robe – Served with distinction in the Curia
    5. Philosophers Robe – Great contributions to the Ethos section.

You get my idea, basically this would Give modding awards some meaning and would set up an awards system that not only promotes activity and good posting but also appeals to the general membership.

I have no bill as of yet, I want to know is such a system can be implemented into the forum skin and how the Curia would like to run it if popular.
Well, if I, Belisarius, the Black Prince, and you all agree on something, I really don't think there can be any further discussion.

hmmm, I can see this quickly becoming a race to see who can get the most posts (I'm referring to the medals for the number of posts) meaning much more spam.

I agree completely that medals are a great idea. As for what actions would be "medal-worthy" exactly, that can be worked out later.

Other forums that I've been to have used these to great success.
Take Starmen.net for example, a fansite for the Earthbound series of video games.

    http://forum.starmen.net/?t=thread&frm_id=6

Click on a thread and you'll see that they hand out medals for participation in various contests and events, and could be easily molded for our needs.

As for handing them out for post count, well, as stated, that can be worked out...

I like this idea. It seems interesting(as long as the awards don't get too generic-image and names). Maybe rep comes with the medals? First I guess we should see if this is possible and if it has enough support. Then develop awards etc

I remember mim making a very solid case for it early to mid way through last year. The trouble was with the hacking of the forum software, iirc. Clearly, we do not have ON objecting (reasonably) to this but I welcome Sim and Mim's opinion on this as it currently stands. In principle this idea, which is widely held, is a very good one.

yeah, it got kicked around hex for a while and everyone thought it was a great idea, but Besim said it couldn't happen until the VB upgrade (if I remember correctly)

There was a whole thread on it somewhere in Q&A I think? One of the other sites that someone was a member of (I have such a good memory ) had a really good example of an implemented medals system - could someone have a look through the old Hex threads? It was a really good example of the system (was it the history forum?)

So, can it be technically done? (I think the last time the answer was a tentative yes but ON quashed it)

I have to agree here as I vaguely remember such things. Besides the medals can always be a special signature image.

I am not to keen on any oriented towards post count however. Shoot that is what the rank names are for anyway.

This talk about the medal system has been discussed for a long time... I do hope we can now implement it, as to my knowledge, the obstacles weren't acceptance or support of it, but implementation.

I would suggest, if a medal system is indeed feasible (and it'd sure help fill up that empty space below the avatar and rep and title), we use this proposal to hammer out some initial medals (such as Bel started), and how they (each individual medal) is awarded (curial vote (like Opifex), awards, contest, Hex bestowment, etc.).

Must ask Mim, I'm sure he had a really good example of a site which had a wide range of really good medals when he originally brought the idea up.

I think medals should be given for real achievements (eg. winning competitions, being voted as most helpful moderator etc) rather than time-serving achievements (eg. number of posts)

The medal system is also a way of indicating whether someone is contributing to the site beyond standard posting, for example Content or Scriptorium work.

Indeed, solves many problems and would help keep people interested.

I did, it doesn't have the site that originally sparked the whole debate off. It was one that a lot of people had in their sigs for a while.

No matter, we have enough to be going on with.

Medals? Good. Medals for duration of stay or postcount (and bear in mind who is saying the latter...) bad. Medals are for special achievements, that is great contributions; I'd say it'd be a very good idea (and... dare I say it... a logical replacement for certain of our ceremonial ranks!)

As I said the actual medals are not important atm. Having spoken to some people, and may I take the opportunity, to, as requested: say the word, "Sex" in this thread, move on and propose legislation. I will write a bill as soon as possible.

    Thank you all.

I don't think this needs legislating for, can't we make it a Curial Decision sort of thing?

to my mind all we really need is Sim saying he is willing to do it - without that we are stuffed.

It could then be run as part of the Content remit.

I'd agree though, I don;t think it is something we could make a bill for as it effects the technical side of the site over which the Curia has no power.
