    Default LTC and Vista

    I know of a few people, including myself, who cannot get LTC to launch in Vista. It seems that Vista does not recognize the batch file that directs the .exe to LTC. Despite the batch, MTW2 loads vanilla every time; I never had this problem under XP. Perhaps Vista does not recognize DOS prompt commands? This issue has been posted in the Technical Problems thread as well. However, Lusted should know of the issue.

    Have any other Vista users run into this problem? Any solutions or suggestions?

    Same here i`m sure that it isn`t compatible with most of the games out right now and probably some others that or coming out soon :hmmm:

    At this point I don't think there will be a solution. Since mod switching is based around the batch files and the batch files don't work with Vista, we will be handicapped (because we know CA won't attempt to help, nor should they really be obligated to). For my part I will probably just carefully transfer the LTC files into the main /Data folder and overwrite what needs to be overwritten. This is the only solution I can think of right now, however annoying it may be.

    MTW2 is compatible with Vista. It is not, however, compatible with CA's mod-switching idea.

    I do have to ask the question though: why the hell did Microsoft make it so batch files don't work with Vista???????

    Solution to the bat file

    1. Rightclick "medieval2.exe" in your M2TW install directory and select Create Shortcut
    2. Rename shortcut to "Lands To Conquer"
    3. Rightclick shortcut and select Properties
    4. In the Properties window change Target path that says something like:
    "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\medieval2.exe"
    to
    "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\medieval2.exe" @landstoconquer.cfg
    5. Click Change Icon... and select "ltc.ico" located in the root directory of M2TW
    6. Click OK.
    7. Drag/copy the new shortcut to Start menu, desktop or whereever you like it.

    8. (Optional step) Stand upright, open your room window (or door if no window), run the shortcut, and scream "GOD WILLS IT!!!".

    Lol @ thorbeck. I hadn't tried the "God wills it!" part. Alas, that too came to naught.

    Just gave the unpacker a whirl. It doesn't work either, but at least you get a legitimate error message pointing out the fact.

    So far this is the first backward compatibilty issue I've run into, *knock on wood*. It is odd that they would remove this feature though. It is quite serious for the modders and mod players.

    So they changed shortcut files in Vista too? That's.. dumb.. Well my procedure works great on XP, and I always used it since I got LTC.

    Oh well, gonna wait with Vista until SP1 is out anyhow

    No, its not an issue with the shortcuts. Your method still requires the batch file to launch which of course does not work under Vista. I will send a word to MS. Maybe this is an issue they could address in SP1.

    Its the same thing with windows98--->windowsXP batch files, they are compatible, its just that some commands must have changed between the operating systems. Just try to mess around with it.

    I'm sure in microsoft it's "Gates wills it!"

    anyway we have Vista here at work and i just tested a BAT file. It works. no problem. So BAT files themselves are not the source of the problem u are having. maybe some command therein or a folder structure?

    Did your test successfully execute a command? The BATs launch and appear for a second but either do nothing (in the case of mod-switch) or receive an error (in the case of the unpacker tool).

    I had the same problem trying to run LTC in XP.
    Check your landstoconquer.cfg file, and make sure it says
    [features]
    mod = landstoconquer
    and not
    [features]
    mod = landstoconquer[log]

    Really? I'm using VHP as well. So we have some people who get it to work and some who can't. I wonder why.

    @Roy1991

    ...my .cfg reads "mod = landstoconquer[video]". I assume the video part should not be there. However, I can't seem to save the file when I delete it. Does anyone have any idea why some people get .cfg files with [video] or [log] at the end?

    Right-click the .cfg file, select properties, and un-tick 'read only'.
    Then you should be able to save the changes.

    No idea what causes it.

    Got it to work. However, the problem was not the read-only option. That was ticked off. It turns out that under properties Vista files have a security tab. you have to manually allow all users to write to such files. As if read-only wasn't enough...

    At any rate, the mod-switch works now. LTC and Vista are compatible after all. Thanks for the help...

    the security tab is also present in XP Professional, guy, not just in Vista.
    And to answer your original question, yes i executed a nomber of commands in the BAT file test like file copying and launcing windows apps. so vista has no probs with batch files.
