What do you think is the most suspenseful scene in cinema history?

My vote has to go to The Deer Hunter, when Mike and Nick are playing Russian Roulette. The Viet Cong officer is screaming at them to pull the trigger while the guards place bets. Then Mike calls for three bullets. He pulls the trigger and it clicks on an empty chamber. Nick is given the revolver, and he slowly places the gun to his head while the guards egg him on.

I'd say the climax of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly has got to be up there. Where the three of them are standing in a circle and you dont know who is going to shoot who. It was really quite well done if you ask me. Its a shame that you can be reasonably sure that the good guy isnt going to get killed though .

Im straining my brain for others but to be honest its not coming to me. I'll post some more up later though .

Yes, a fairly long and decisive scene. Good one.

There's also Jurassic Park, when the two kids are hiding in the kitchen. The raptors figure out how to open doors, and they slowly pace the aisles looking for prey.

Well for me it's got to be in "Aliens" when they're welding the doors shut with themselves inside and the motion tracker is pinging in the silence with Hudson calling off the ever shrinking proximity, no build-up music or anything, just the silence and the pinging.
Then the realization that they were inside the room with them, in the ceiling...
That scared the crap out of me when I was a kid...falling asleep staring at my ceiling...

Crash, where the shopkeeper shoots at the man whose daughter runs to protect him. That was really suspenseful.

That was more a "oh ****" than suspense...but I agree anyways

The Changeling, a 1980s movie with George C Scott, The Ring and Sixth Sense borrowed heavily from this movie with certain elements. Anyway there is a scene when Scott hears a noise from a child upstairs...mind you he lives alone and he goes to bottom of steps and a ball slowly rolls down the stairs as you hear a child giggling. Doesnt sound so suspensive now a days but at the time of the movies release it was really rather creepy, the whole movie was based on a young boy dying in the house.

Also how can anyone not mention The Shining and Nicholson entering room 237. The Deer Hunter scene is absolutely great as well.

Halloween (1978). The whole movie is like one big suspense scene, and it works magnificently. But especially the part when she gets inside Doyle(the little kid)'s house, and is just waiting for The Shape.
I think Halloween 4 was actually more suspenseful, in certain scenes, though.

Halloween got that music with the feel of being hunted. If I'm not mistaken. Long time since I saw it.

Yeah, the music was just perfect. The Rob Zombie-directed reboot of Halloween coming out this year should kick ass, or so I hear.

    I agree. Great scene.

Another good suspenseful scene is in The Godfather. When Michael Corleone is sitting across the table from Sollozzo and McCluskey after retrieving the pistol from the bathroom. You know it's comin', but the suspense builds to a peak right as he assassinates them. Great stuff.
