The religious system introduced in MTW2 adds a great deal of fun to the game but like so many other things CA didnt take full advantage of its potential, and we are left to hope the modders will exploit it further.
With that in mind i want to throw a few things out there in the hope that some bright modder somewhere might be inspired.
One of the most annoying things about the the CA pope is he is way to mercenary. One of the easiest ways to maintain good faction is to simply set up a small tithe every turn. Setting up a regular payment should only give a one time boost in reputation - and a hit if it ever comes to an end. But a higher boost then a single payment of course, there should be a cap limiting how much faction you can gain through blatent bribery with a cooldown period. And of course the player shouldnt know what the cap is so they can countinue to pour cash in- The Pope will always take your money.
When a faction is excommunicated the Pope demands the player cancel any alliances wich is fine, but the time frame is to long. I find if i ignore it the faction will be reconciled before i have to cancel the alliance. Time frame for mission completion is to long, i believe its like 9 turns!
And what about trade rights? The time honored political move of economic sanctions isnt represented at all.
And we cant forget the Popes role as peacemaker, missions to make contact with other catholic factions, to establish trade rights or alliances.
Im sure there is much more that can be done, The Papacy can stand alot of improvement.
