    Default worth it?

I have a chance to get a pentium 4 3GHz processor installed instead of my 2.66GHz P4 for free...but will it change anything, if a 3GHz processor is not worth the change please tell me.

    Simplified form:
I have a 2.66Ghz P4, I have the chance to replace with a 3GHz P4, is it worth the replacement or is 3GHz the same as 2.66GHz, in terms of gaming?

    Thank you!

I don't know anything about pre Core 2 Intel CPU's, but maybe you could tell the actual names of the processor's?

I already did, they are both Pentium 4, my current one is 2.66 GHz and the one I can get for free is Pentium 4 3GHz...my question: Is it worth the replacement?

    1. its free and free is always worth it
    2. 3 gig is faster then 2 gigs
    3. it takes like 5-10 minutes to swap a cpu
    4. make sure your mother board can support the faster chip since most mb's can only run a small range ex, 1.6-2.2 gig
    5. will you notice a difference ,slightly . would you notice the difference in the latest chipsets yeah but not that much.
    6. its free

it's defintly worth it if its free, just be aware it will generate a bit more heat but i don't think the change will be too drastic.

Damn, I don't see any reason to say no Free cpus! It won't make a huge difference, but you can always overclock..
Muahah, you just wasted 3 seconds of your life!

Thanks guys, I also opened the side of my PC so it can cool the PC much faster.

Another question, what's overclocking? *slowly walks out of the thread awaiting an insult how newbish he is in this topic*

Overclocking is the action of making a piece of hardware run at a faster rate than was originally intended so an example in your case would be making that 3.0GHz cpu run at 3.8GHz.

It requires some knowlage of the bios and the confidence that you are willign to risk potential damage to the cpu or other components. Normally it's quite safe to overclock intill you start screwing with the voltages which is when it becomes a bit more dangerous. It normally requires good cooling and fairly good quality components.

Ive done a bit of overclocking but ive got a crappy bios and crappy parts so it's not to extreme.

    Sempron 2800+ to a 3500+ speeds basically taking a 1.6ghz cpu up to 2.0ghz.

According to my cousin (a computer pro who can do the swapping..etc):
It turned out that 3GHz has a newer feature (forgot the name) which is as if it adds another 1.4 GHz to the processor, and that is amazing, all he needs to do now is check the compatibility, and then it's M2TW with less lag!

Overclocking is interesting, if my PC is open from the side and the PC has a fan cooling system on it, can it survive overclocking?

Wouldnt leave the box open as the fans are no longer moving air through the box they are now moving it around the box.....you need to draw air over/through your heatsinks. Overclocking yes but you really wont see much difference generally your gpu /graphics processor is picking up the hard work of rendering your game which hogs the most system resources.

If you change the frequeny it will run faster, I'd go for it.

Actually, there are seven(7) P4 processors with the speed of 2.66 GHz. There are also 7 that run at 3.0 GHz and 8 that run at 3.06 GHz (which I've seen people mistakenly refer to as 3 GHz processors). To really find out what you have, use CPU-Z. But the bottom line is, if it's free and a newer revision of a chip from the same company, then go for it.

This sounds suspiciously like the Megahertz Myth. I'd be careful with that statement, if it's that vague then it's not true.
