How To: Multiplayer with Hamachi + Hamachi M2TW Networks

For those who are new to multiplayer using Hamachi, here is instructions how to do:

How To: Multiplayer with Hamachi

1. If you want to play and join a public Hamachi network, use a clean installation of Medieval II + the latest patch (1.2 + 1.3) OR the Kingdoms expansion. Don´t use modification packages for avoiding compability problems.

2. Download and install Hamachi. Follow the instructions and configure the application.

3. In your Medieval II folder, by default: "C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War", find the file called "medieval2.preference.cfg" and open it with notepad. Scroll down until you find where it says "use_ip = " under the category [network]. Put Hamachis IP number in (big number located at the top of your Hamachi window). For example: "use_ip = 5.57.972.139".

4. Save "medieval2.preference.cfg".

5. If you use a software firewall, allow full Internet access and server rights for both Hamachi and Medieval II (both UDP and TCP).

6. If you use a router (NAT), you have to make a port forwarding. In Hamachi, go to: "Configure/Preferences/Status/Detailed configuration", there you mark both UDP and TCP and type which port you want to use, for example: "27750". You now have to allow Hamachi using this port, "27750", in your router for both UDP and TCP. Go to Portforward and choose your router model and then the instructions for "Hamachi". Go directly to the instructions for your router model.

7. In Hamachi you can now join or create a new network (name + password). Look in this forum/thread for any new networks to join.

8. Start Medieval II, click "Multiplayer" and choose your player name (same as your Hamachi member name is recommended). Then click "LAN Battles" to enter the lobby and either host (create) a new game or join an existing game.

IMPORTANT!

• A network can contain 1 owner, up to 16 basic members and up to 256 premium members = up to 273 members in total (for premium membership see pricelist).

• Don´t be connected online to the same player you are playing with through several networks at once, as this will decrease the performance of the game (lag). Go offline in those other networks where the same player appears for best performance.

• If you have created a network (owner) and are a premium member, please disable encryption for improving the performance of the games between all premium members within that network. Games with basic members are always encrypted.

If you still have a lagproblem, then you have to lower your audio and video settings. Still lag? get a faster machine and/or faster Internet connection.

Hi there! My friend and I tried to set up a game over Hamachi and we've hit a bit of a snag. The gist of it is this:

- When we're in the lobby he can't see me or anything I type. Nor can he see any of the games I host.

- I can see him, his chat messages and the games he hosts just fine. However, when I try to join them, I get an error message along the lines of "No reply from host".

As far as I know, all firewalls have been turned off. Port forwarding is active on both machines and the config files have been modified to include the Hamachi IPs.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but my computer is directly connected to my router, while my friend's computer is wirelessly connected to his. Might that affect the port forwarding somehow? Also, I noticed that in the Medieval 2 configuration file, there is a line called "use_port = 27750", which is the default port for Medieval 2. My Hamachi port, however, is 12975. Should I change the config file to reflect my Hamachi port or is it suppose to work without me having to change it?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks

First I would suggest both of you to join a Hamachi network with other players online, to see if it´s you or your friend that have the connection problem. Try to both join and host a game. From there we can then isolate the problem further.

Unfortunately, in most cases firewalls cannot simply be disabled in order to allow you to play. Disabling the firewall will not open the necessary ports. It will simply shut down the firewall and leave the ports closed. So regarding to the above said, I recommend you to use the same portnumber everywhere: both in Hamachi, in the "medieval2.preference.cfg" file, and in your firewall/router. Don´t forget to allow full Internet access and server rights for both UDP and TCP. Using the same portnumber eliminates the possibility for any mistakes regarding ports.

The only negative wireless connection contributes to is slower gameplay since the traffic is encrypted between the computer and the wireless router (= lag). Of course you could turn off the encryption, but that isn´t a solution I recommend for security reasons. If possible, I recommend using a wired connection between the computer and the router. /Cerxes.

ok, me and my friend both using v1, and latest version of hamachi, im not on a router and he is, i've open ports on his router, adjusted everything like you said, and before i looked at this thread we could see each other in the lan but just not join game, now we cant even see each other in lan, do we NEED to have ver 1.2?? and that port forward link, the hamachi set up on there still has the "magic" button, there is no such thing anymore, and his router menu isnt really the best set up, he's using a DI-524, if someone could, e-mail me a COMPLETE noob guide, step by step instructions on what to do for BOTH comps? it would be greatly appreciated, and I'll give you a cd-key for a game from a list that i have, thanks in advance
