    Default All quiet on the Western Front (2021)

    The 2021 remake of "All quiet on the Western Front", a german Netflix production, will come at September 29th, 2022 on cinema and at October 29th on Netflix.

    Its already one of the german nominations for the Oscar and the first german adaption of Erich Remarque's famous book.

    I'm really interested in watching this movie, as the content of the former movies were very realistic and high emotionally too.

    More infos about scens from the movie and the actors:

    It is so with WWI, even more so than with WWII.. by the 1938 the "innocence" about modern warfare was already lost, but back in the 1915 no one was really ready for what going to be up to (certainly not the officers).

    Remarque is a great writer in translation, I look forward to the German voice of war made by Germans.

    If Downfall and the White ribbon are anything to go by it will be horrifying and honest.

    @Morty

    if you haven't seen it yet, 1917 is a good movie too.

    Kinda wish they'd make it based off Storms of Steel for a more refreshing perspective, especially since they already made 2 very decent movies off the Remarque's book.

    Interesting, thank you.

    I don`t think its possible to get the tone and the overall feeling of the Book into a movie.

    I think it's possible, something like 90 minutes of Spielberg's Normandy landings but more gloomy. but viewing it would be practically masochistic. The "bright side", the anti-war and anti-nationalist message.

    Edit: Directed by Mel Gibson. He is ok with gore and has already directed a belic film.

    Its a very rare book that can be translated to film. No Country for old Men was one I think that went well, and some noir detective fiction like Dashiell Hammett seems to as well. I think some George RR Martin did too, no surprise as he was a screen writer as well as a prose writer.

    But yeah I think you make a really good point.

    I have very little faith in Netflix movies being good. I don't know why they all end up being bland, inaccurate and uninspiring.

    I had the same idea yesterday. Watched it. To be honest, I don't actually think it is a good portrayal of WW1. It is like the well known horrors of WW1 are addressed like items that need to be ticked off the list: the advances across no mans land, the gas attacks, the tanks, the vermin, the incessant shelling..... The problem I have is they do not add up to a convincing whole. No sense that these things had to be endured often day in, day out, marking the people and the landscape, turning the war zone into the closest thing ever to hell on earth. Because of that, the narrative does not support the existence of a vast disconnect between the common soldier and top brass. Ticking that item off the list is left almost entirely up to cinematic effects like excessively jarring set changes which at some point had me wondering if we were even in the same timeline.
