Thread: GPU is overheating while CPU is cool.

  1. #1

Default GPU is overheating while CPU is cool.

On my new RTX 3080 while playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the GPU gets to 90+ C while my CPU is around 40 C. It's a graphic heavy game and I have settings to the max and experience negligible frame rate reduction, I'd think some the of the game would use the CPU, especial since I have a brand new CPU 9550X (or something close).

Any help would be appreciated as it doesn't seem to regulate itself.

Kingdom Come Deliverance is just a very graphics heavy game, it uses Crysis engine iirc, so its pretty normal that you're getting the GPU stressed.

It *is* a graphically demanding game but even when I was playing on my 1080ti I never had those sorts of temperature issues.

Whats the GPU's temp when you're not gaming? What's the temp when you play another GPU intensive game?

I've got an RTX 3080 as well so if you think it would help I can re-install KCD and see if I have similar temperature problems.

Your case fans could also be in a bad spot too, but I don't think that would account for a 90c temperature.

Also cleaning the fans can help greatly, if webs of dust are blocking the air circulation.

I turned HDR off for all of my monitors and temp is now 38 C, was running in the 60s C while not gaming. While gaming it's in the high 80s C and low 90s C. Fans should be clean as I've only had it for a few months and haven't really gamed. My GPU Memory is high 40s C. CPU never gets above 45 C, gaming or not.

60 while not gaming is unnormally hot. Hopefully no defect.

Turning HDR off brought down the GPU Memory and GPU by 10 C, 50 C and 40 C respectably when not gaming. Did nothing for temp while gaming.

That's super weird, I don't have HDR as my monitors pretty old. Glad you figured it was that!

Multiple monitors could explain it, even if you're not using them for the game itself sometimes the game is poorly optimized for that and it will cause excess GPU usage. You could try unplugging excess monitors and seeing what temps you get when you're playing again.

If the fans aren't dirty, there simply may not be enough of them or they're in less-optimal positions.

60c temps shouldn't cause degradation but keeping the GPU at 90c for long periods of time (days and hours) would definitely cause degradation of some sort over the lifetime of the GPU

The 3080 is a lot more card but has basically the same cooling as the 2080, so it's going run hotter by default. The VRAM in the 3080 is apparently rated for 110 C but some models do begin throttling at 83 C.

    Things I would do:

    1. check the normal temps for the card model. Some, for example evga run a little hotter than say gigabyte.

    2. check the airflow in the case. how much does the temperature drop if you remove the side panel. if it's an airflow/cooling problem just add more fains.

    3. clean dust from the case and clean the fan/heatskins with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol - preferably electronics alcohol or sanitary alcohol

    4. check if the card is overclocked. that's going to run hotter by default.

    5. return the card, if it's still in warranty and have it replaced / buy a new one from a different maker.
