Default Missile damage negated by water?

Hi all - was going through a siege battle (I was attacker) yesterday where the reinforcing enemy army came at me through the river. Their missile units straggled in and my own 6 units of archers concentrated on them 1 at a time. However, I felt like my archers did 1/4 to 1/3 of their normal damage to "very light" missile units with no shields. Wondering if standing in water confers a defensive bonus against missiles of some kind?

Nothing like that in the files but could be that some projectiles hit water first so it acted same way as trees, by physically blocking projectiles rather than giving units % buffs to missile block.

I had that thought as well - must be if there is nothing in the files. Thank you (as always) Kam!
