Thread: Your reasons for choosing a specific Roman house for a Grand Campaign as Rome

Default Your reasons for choosing a specific Roman house for a Grand Campaign as Rome

What is your favorite Roman house?
    - The house of Cornelia
    - The house of Julia
    - The house of Junia

I'd rather choose the house of Cornelia because once you take a settlement from a different culture, you wouldn't have serious public order problems because of culture differences ( That's one of the main public order problems causes when you recently occupy a settlement from a different culture ). And because of the very cheap auxiliary units upkeep cost. You can rely on them for many battles.

It's the House of Cornelia for me too, as I enjoy trying different auxiliary units and (as you said) their auxiliaries have cheaper upkeep.

Once you finish off the Etruscan League, Where do you prefer to go first? To the North against the Gauls or to the South against Carthage? I prefer going to the South first specially to finish off the Carthaginians ( And the Lybians, too ) as soon as possible. I'd rather do it early ( I believe conquering the Gallic territories can wait ) because it is the best moment because Carthage is at war with both Masaesyli and Gaetuli. And sometimes Siracuse joins the war too. I know taking an army to Carthaginian territory in Africa can be dangerous because it could be intercepted by a Carthaginian or a Lybian fleet ( You know you almost stand no chance for defeating a fleet with your transport ships. They'd all be rammed and drowned ) I'd recommend first raising a big enough fleet to escort your army on the sea. However, I think it is better that you leave at least a small army watching the northern frontier just in case Liguria or another Gallic faction declares you war.

Uusally, I go north against the nearest Gauls until I hold the territory on the Italian side of the mountain passes (and maybe Illyria) and before going for Carthage (or possible somewhere else, depending on the state of other factions at the time.)

You're right, conquering the Gallic lands can wait, and yes, it helps to attack Carthage when they're ar war with nearby kingdoms.

I escort my transports with a fleet, too - and I know what you mean about the effectiveness of warship rams on transports. When I play as Carthage, I usually try to intercept Roman legions at sea with a half-stack fleet of Carthaginian warships.

Yes. Defeating an enemy army with a navy on the sea is a piece of cake. You enjoy ramming the transport ships lol. Warships are much faster than transport ships. You can outmanuever them easily.

Cornelia is objectively the best house, but I believe I remember people agreeing that Julia was the best house if you were going to be aggressive and constantly blitzing? Either way, I'm more of a crawler and I like to turtle, so Cornelia is usually my choice. Like hell I'm paying full upkeep for those Auxiliary Elephants!

Exactly. It is better to expand slow but sure. First securing the cities ( public order, the capacity for repeling an attack by themselves, etc ) before advancing to try to grab the next province. Yes. Elephants cost less to maitain but you should be careful in the desert because it cripples them. And avoid autoresolving battles even if the prediction says you'll lose only 5% of your army. Elephants are always the first target in the battle autoresolutions.
