A mate sent me an opinion by ZNorm Finklestein, very persuasive and thoughtful.

He gives Alito due praise and criticism too I think, but above all the respect he shows for his opponents in the religious conservative groups is worthwhile. Should be more of it.
Woah - Finkelstein said something smart for once?

I’d be surprised if we don’t get another summer of “fiery but mostly peaceful protests” out of this, and all over the potential of having to drive a few hours to a blue state to get an abortion. Peak clown world. But today is a day for joy and a day for humanity. Potentially hundreds of thousands of lives saved until the Democrats figure out a workaround, who will then grow up and have babies of their own. Gen Z is already likely the smallest generation in our nation’s history and it will already cause massive problems. Hopefully this will help some.
Of these facts there cannot be any shadow of doubt: for instance, that civil society was renovated in every part by Christian institutions; that in the strength of that renewal the human race was lifted up to better things-nay, that it was brought back from death to life, and to so excellent a life that nothing more perfect had been known before, or will come to be known in the ages that have yet to be. - Pope Leo XIII

Good! It was unconstitutional from day one.

Not a surprise, the party of individual liberty and small government has been dead set on regulating women's bodies for literal decades.

No, but there is an initiative by conservative lawmakers to force women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term.

Oh if only there were ways to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

Less than 1% of abortions are due to rape or incest and that’s remained steady for years. No one has a constitutional right to end human lives for convenience.

I would like to point out just how sweet it is that this wonderful decision came out on the day when most Christians celebrate the feast of the nativity of St John the Baptist.

There is more contraception available today and the ease of access is greater than at any point in human history. Unwanted pregnancies are ridiculously easy to avoid. Still, I am amused at how you are trying to argue that women have the right to murder someone simply because they were not smart/wise enough to use contraception.

Rape can be hard to prevent. Excluding rape Republicans have advocated that forms of birth control like the Plan B be banned. I think contraception is the best way in the world to stop abortions. But you don't see Republicans being big champions or even advocating for greater or easier access for birth control for women.

Be a shame if conservative politicians were also trying to take actions to limit contraceptives...oh wait.

Still, I am amused at how you are trying to argue that women have the right to murder someone simply because they were not smart/wise enough to use contraception.
A fetus isn't someone, a clump of cells should not have more rights than a person.

Straight from the horse's mouth. Justice Thomas is advocating the court reconsider earlier rulings including the 1965 Griswold v Connecticut case regarding contraception. Contraception is about to become a political issue again. I always hear conservatives barking for the gold old days. Well we are definitely headed to the old days.

Remind me, what percentage of abortions are done due to rape?

1% currently but why does that actually matter? Are saying that women should be forced to carry to term a pregnancy as the result of rape?

An internal document obtained by Newsweek outlines intelligence shared by the Department of Homeland Security with the Catholic Church of a planned "Night of Rage," targeting churches and pregnancy centers over their opposition to abortion rights. The document sheds light on how law enforcement and the church are bracing for backlash after a leaked opinion showed the Supreme Court preparing to rescind federal abortion rights.

Labeled an "urgent memo," the document is from the Diocese of Stockton, California, and is directed to all clergy, as well as parish and pastoral staff. The memo states that Jesse Rangel, a DHS agent, told the diocese that federal law enforcement has discovered a manifesto from an "extremist group" calling for attacks on churches beginning at 8 p.m. the evening the court issues its opinion.

The memo does not describe the specific threats facing churches, but states that Rangel told the diocese that "large groups with cells nationwide have already been discovered 'casing' parishes, including here in California." The diocese's leadership has issued a "critical notice" for clergy, parishes and pastoral center staff to "develop a plan should you see or hear anything suspicious."

Meanwhile Democrat politicians are going around calling the SCOTUS decision and even the court itself “illegitimate” while blasting the airwaves with Congressional theater insisting that kind of talk is evidence of a criminal conspiracy.

The most powerful Democrat politician has already addressed such issues.

This is a Supreme Court that would overturn Brown v. Board of Education.
