I have to get some good techno/trance/electronic music for a friend of mine, and actually keep some for myself since some of it sounds pretty good, even if I'm a huge rock/metal fan. Anyone know of any good trance or techno bands or just plain good songs?

Not pure as pure techno/electronica as such, but I'd suggest the Prodigy and Pendulum. They're more rock/punk influenced than most electronic/synthesizer based music, but maintain the drum and bass staple.

    Pendulum - Slam

The video's pretty class as well!

    The Prodigy - Firestarter

    The classic, Firestarter

I'll post some more in a bit...for now...time to go to lectures :/

Not strictly any of those genres but great none-the-less..

    Combichrist
    Suicide Commando
    Unter Null
    VNV Nation
    Assemblage 23
    Velvet Acid Christ
    Icon of Coil
    Wumpscut
    Panzer AG
    Funker Vogt

Most have a tinge of industrial and they're fairly diverse. Bands like Suicide Commando are much faster paced and intense whereas Assemblage 23 have proper vocals, lyrics and are much more accessible.

The Professional and Cool thing to do here would be to ask you which Type of Electronic music do you want to hear ? House , BreakBeat , Trance , Techno , Jungle , Hardcore , Downtempo , These are just the Main Catagorys if you want i could go into sub catagorys too , like Detroit , Tribal , Acid, Minimal , Dub etc etc...etc... but doing this would make me look like a Pompus Prick who likes to hear himself talk.

Now failing to answer that im going to suggest you some Really Easy and pleasant music to hear from the Most Popular Catagory called Anthem House.

First try Insomnia's Faithless and lets see how you like it, listen to it till the complete end dont stop it before it gets to the end part.

and remember you can download these songs on iTunes and listen to them anytime.

Next, try replacement Killers from Chemcial Brothers, i couldnt find the orignal video but watch this the song is replacement killers or if you dont want to watch an anim video then download the song, you wont be dissapointed.

    And Darude's -SandStorm.

    Chemical Brothers Block Rocking Beats.

Paul Okenfold-Ready Steady Go,very cool video.

Im forgetting a lot of tracks , tell me if you want more.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Leftfield, because they are true masters of the art.

Groups I'd recommend (not all strictly "Techno" though)

Aphex Twin (quite insane, but incredibly good)
Leftfield (everything from chilled out to intense)
VNV Nation (Semi-industrial gothic, very good if you like listenably dark stuff)
Pendulum (very good Drum and Bass)
    KLF (pure 90's techno genius)
    Prodigy (duh)
Faithless (Musically talented and lyrically inspired)
    Chemical brothers (commercial, but good)
Ultraviolence (for a bit of industrial Gabba)
    2 Unlimited (for comedy value)

Ah yeah - forgot about Aphex Twin. Funny story a mate told me, is that they were in some place in Scotland, and the music was unusually good... no-one could work out quite why... until someone pointed it out was actually Richard David Jones on the decks Place soon filled up.

Haha, soren But ironically, I would say the same about all forms of rock

Anyway, ProfessorPaul, my entire library is all kinds of electronica ranging from your basic techno/trance/goa/ambient/house/breakbeat etc. etc. I could give you an entire list of artists but that would take a while, and might clog up the thread. PM me if you'd like a list.

But one song I'd that I've personally become obsessed with is by Andain - "Beautiful Things (Gabriel and Dresden Remix). I specifically found this song on the album "Nyana" by DJ Tiesto. Haven't yet met a person who likes electronica who doesn't like this song!

Try Dj Tiesto. Really the only song I know by him is "Extasy". That is one amazing song.

Maybe you should start with limiting your desires to one or few similar genres for a start....Askin for good music , the way you do is ridicoulous ,just because of number of main genres and numourous number of subgenres that spread out since the 90-ies....claimin that one or other is the best or better than other is way to much depending on the taste, mood or even time when they are predicted to be played....So concentrate....and whatever you do..AVOID COMMERCIAL STUFF....thats crap....
