    Default Christmas time again

Once again we will be celebrating the coming of Jesus Christ into our world as a little baby. But just how special is it for you? Well, for me every time I hear someone sing " O Holy Night " my heart beats faster as my eyes well up for I think it just beats every other carol on reaching the target. So dear friends what does Christmas mean to you?

Its the time to celebrate Midwinter solstice beneath the Yule tree. The days become brighter again.
Cause tomorrow is a brand-new day
And tomorrow you'll be on your way
Don't give a damn about what other people say
Because tomorrow is a brand-new day

You know it was about two years later when the wise men gave Him their gifts, the same time Herod wanted Him killed. So these men by enquiring of Herod where the baby King of the Jews was born set the ball rolling that Joseph, Mary and Jesus had to flee into Egypt thus fulfilling another prophecy.

I like the quite different birth narratives. It reminds me that Jesus message was more important than his birth, because it seems almost no one who knew him bothered to write it down, so later generations had to come up with some stories that demonstrated their respect for him.

Its also a great time to give gifts and cook for the ones you love, I love it

Thats the really important point of this festival: family and quietness from the storm of life.

    Cyclops,

Where are these quite different narratives about His birth?

Basics I have walked you through a number of problems in the gospels including the birth narratives, especially the incoherence and historical inaccuracy (eg the silly claim that Jesus was born under both Herod the Great's reign and Quirinus' governorship, which never overlapped). You don't acknowledged valid arguments, usually you pivot to non sequitur laden denials and off topic preaching when you're not cut and pasting mostly irrelevant verbage, so I don't see any point in responding.

You may be a person of good faith, I take you at your word, but your argumentation is not and you've demonstrated this repeatedly. I know you feel you have a duty to preach, but I am not here to listen to you.

    Cyclops,

I remember something about the argument over this Roman Quirinius and I said that the man didn't actually have to be present in the area for him to be governor. Were he present in Rome when appointed then from that moment on he was governor and could by decree order anything to be set in motion before he even set foot in the place. I may be wrong yet I think I got that information from Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire which had quite a few things to say about Jesus of Nazareth. So, if I speak of what the Bible says I am telling perhaps in simpler language what it means and if you want to call that preaching so be it. As for cutting and pasting that has only increased because of my state of health and done as proof that I am not the only person who knows their Bible.

An execuse for celebration in our boring and meaningless life.

It's like beer - we mostly drink water but occassionally some beer to cheer ourselves up and cover up the reality that human life is just as dull as ant's.

Let's assume Jesus' birthday is true, what the does it have to do with his followers? A person is defined by his actions and deeds, not by his birth, and we all know he didn't start preaching as a baby.

    AqD,

What's important about the birth of Christ is that God the Son had taken on humanity to fulfil God's plan for us yet remained fully God as well. His birth was as natural as any other mother's might be yet His conception was something quite Supernatural so when we celebrate it we do so for that reason. Otherwise, many who enjoy the holiday see it as only a fairytale yet go along for the ride anyway.

@basics So we're like infected plants and Jesus was a pesticide intended to fix us but as planned by God quite ineffective. Is it truly worth of celebration to be revealed our shortcomings but unable to fix anyway? We were all happy ignorant sinners before he came!

    AqD,

You think of yourself as whatever you like but, if you ever experience rebirth you'll see that it is very effective, why? Because God didn't become a man, die on a cross to fail yet still be raised from the dead three days later. Oh you may well think that you are happy in your sin yet reality shows up differently. One day you will inevitably die and then it will hit you how wrong you were.

We don't really celebrate Christmas aside from exchanging a couple of presents, so we'll open presents whenever everyone is awake on Saturday and then go about our regularly scheduled activities. Hopefully someone gets me something alcoholic so I don't have to go to a gas station for some Christmas Juice.

I noticed something, which is probably because I'm now older and no longer a kid - I used to absolutely adore this period of the year, Xmas for me was something that I counted down to. But the mass commercialisation of everything, with Xmas decorations coming to shops now in early October (????), it's ruining the whole magic for me.

    It's quite disheartening, it's a bit diluted I think.

    Yep, it's a bit ridiculous, isn't it?

Not to mention all the people rushing about the last week before Christmas being upset and rude to all of the people who are forced to work on Christmas. It's not the same.

I can buy pretty much anything I want for myself so the allure of counting down to Christmas in hopes of getting that one big thing you've been waiting for all year is gone.

I changed my tune about gifts - I was very excited to receive gifts, but now that I'm older and I can buy whatever I want, whenever I want, the whole "joy" of receiving has largely been erased.

I'm not sure if this is the normal part of growing up and being an adult, but I've switched to being Santa instead for others. At least that gives me the joy of buying nice things while also doing something nice.

Oh definitely. I get way more out of giving something to my nephew and watching him open it than I do getting a pair of socks or 50 bucks or whatever.

That being said, I have occasionally gotten something as a gift that I didn't even know I needed or wanted, and that has been cool. Two years ago my brother got me an FM/Radio blutooth adapter for my car and now I don't have to around with an aux cord anymore - didn't even know that was a possibility.
