Another hint: seven very specific characters are represented in that artwork

ouch forgot to post new hints, sorry
so to recap:
- German author, famous for his surrealistic works, active on the first half of 20th Century. This specific artwork is representing 7 specific characters, which have a theological inspiration.
Once you identify the characters, the title should come easily and the author will follow after some more research I'm sure

No one wants to guess? Really the hint about "theological characters" is a give away!

well it's been over a week, time to reveal the answer
The Seven Deadly Sins by Otto Dix.

Now that I read about the painting, I vaguely remember seeing this years ago.
Dix is very underrated IMO, both artistically and politically.
Please take the turn Araval, I have nothing interesting to post RN

I'm busy with real life for a week, I'd rather not host now and hope somebody else comes in.
OMG! The whole world has been waiting for me!
we are not many to play this game, anyways
Ok so, I always assume that when I don't know it, the author is Estonian I did some researches about Estonian Impressionists/Expressionists, but could not find this specific work yet (most impressionist artwork have a similarity that makes it hard to distinguish one author from the other).
I could do use of a hint.

Just chiming in to say I love that Otto Dix painting. Looks awesome, the grotesque symbolic figures looking like some weird hybrid between a classic Hieronymus Bosch painting and a psychedelic Salvador Dali one. I was unfamiliar with his work, so thanks for sharing that, Flinn!

Easter break is over
So when I first saw that piece of artwork it immediately rang a bell in my head for some similarity. Following your suggestion, I thought of Assisi, but after a bit of researching I realized it was too narrow, so the other alternatives could be Rome, Florence, Venice, probably Naples.. with Rome on the top of the list. From that it was just a matter of good googling skills (it wasn't an easy search anyways, I finally found the pic in an auction site )
Konrad Magi - Roma

It's the most expensive Estonian artwork ever sold.
Magi is quite known here in Italy, I'm sure he had at the least one major exposition in Rome, probably more.

This is a particular, but the artworks is so famous it should indeed help you, not hinder you

Hint time: the author is one of the greatest sculptors who ever lived and quite certainly the last one to produce so many statues in that most classic style. He's been known as the "new Fidia".

Ok, I managed to find it. Amore e Psiche by Antonio Canova.
Indeed, what a huge talent he was.
