This is a true sad story, for once.

I witnessed it with my eyes, so don't you dare to question me about if that's true or not.. however, I once lost a relative, a cousin, to leukemia.. I'd really wanted to post a picture of him here, but I'm not going to because of respect .. he was 17, you would be amazed by how good looking and strong he was. His whole illness was a slow descent into darkness, for all the people involved.. him, his family, all the relatives and in particular my family since my father was involved in the useless process of trying to save his life.
I'm not a religious person, heck not at all, but I never, for any reason, miss his yearly requiem mass.. just saying eh.

You would thought that to be sad enough, but this story it's even sadder than that.. life and death are part of what we experience every day, but sometimes there are things that go above and beyond our understanding of the natural word, such as this story.

When he was born, my cousin I mean, his family got him a small dog, a female mutt which, in all due honesty, was the ugliest dog I'd ever seen in my life, a crossbreed between an underdeveloped sheep and a excessively large mouse. However, the poor thing, Laika was her name, in memory of the first dog in space, was good-natured and very quiet. She lived all her life in the courtyard in front of their house (which happened to be at the side of mine) and never, for any reason, moved out of it even if the gate was constantly kept open; at the most she would sit on the entrance itself, waiting for my cousin and his brother when they were back from school.

Fast forward, years go by, the dog became old, my cousin became sick. He was moved to the hospital during the last 6 months of his life, in Rome... when he eventually died, his body was brought back to our local church for the funeral, and then buried at the cemetery in our small village: for the very first time in her life, Laika exited from the courtyard, even if she could barely walk because of old age, sit outside of the church during the whole ceremony, then walked past the procession of people to the cemetery (it is close, barely one Km away) and once my cousin was eventually buried, she just sat there in front of his tomb. She did not want to eat or drink, all that she did was to quietly sit there and sleep at time, looking at people coming and going.. when the family picked her up to bring her home to try to feed her, she started to cry, literally cry I cannot use any other term, softly but continuously, so they decided to leave her there.

Eventually, she died after few days, and even if it was not allowed, we dug a small hole in the garden in front of the family chapel and buried her there. There's always at the least one flower ever since where she's buried.

Really no one can explain how she did know that he died and that his body was in that coffin and all that.. there are some things which we need to accept for what they are, I suppose.

Also, ironically, people who do selfless acts like this are usually very humble and don't care to be in the spotlight, and yet that nevertheless garners greater media attention. Kudos to this kid wanting to give back to others instead of thinking only about herself.
