    The recommended difficulty for Europa Barbarorum 2.35A R3.5 still stands at Hard Campaign difficulty and Medium/Hard Battle difficulty.

    Yep, Hard Campaign, Medium Battle is the way to go. One disclaimer though - Hard or Very Hard Campaign mode will cause the AI to more likely win autoresolve battles. Since all naval engagements are autoresolved in M2TW, you have a much greater risk of losing embarrassing defeats against smaller navies. Also, your relations with all other factions will slowly revert back to Mixed instead of Outstanding, so maintaining good relations is much harder. That doesn't mean you should play Medium Campaign - in that mode the campaign AI is neutered and cannot hire mercenaries, giving you too much breathing room and an exclusive pool of units
