Thread: Steam Medieval II missing voice lines

  1. #1

Default Steam Medieval II missing voice lines

The steam version of Medieval 2 has some missing strategy map voice lines. Captains were supposed to have a bit more voice lines AND most notably all Chivalrous generals in Steam have only one "Selected" line per accent (you know, those annoying "For the Reich" and etc.).
Reference One: Third Age Total war has some of those missing voice lines enabled. So any Steam user can hear the missing English captain lines in the mod.
Reference Two: When Legend of Total War was recording a Disc version gameplay those voice lines WERE PRESENT. And not just ones for Captains but Chivalrous generals too.
I am 100% sure this IS a thing, but I found nothing on the internet about it.
When you unpack the steam version those sound files ARE NOT there. They were cut entirely or something.
Is there a way to get those missing Disc version voice files for Steam? Maybe a mod or something?
If I get no reply I`m probably going to write on a Third Age section.

You could have a closer look into it by experimenting with my 'sound dev kit'. As to speeches: it's based on traits of the general (captains can't have traits) and only for selected accents. See the export_descr_sounds_prebattle.txt file for which accents the full prebattle speech is available.
There is also a file (can't recall which one right now) that designates other factions to have 'one liners' - if a faction is neither in the prebattle file or in there then there is no speech at all.

Thanks for your reply! To be honest, I was not talking about speeches at all. I was talking about those things units say on a strat map when you select or use them. It really annoyed me that chivalrous generals have so few lines, and all of them only have one greeting sound. I mean, you're clicking on them all of your gameplay. My ears strated bleeding after hearing "For the Rich" and "Hail my King" for like 10 times in a row. And THEN I discovered that some mods like Third Age and The Last Kingdom have lines with VANILLA voices that were missing in the steam version of the game. I mean, it's such a minor thing, but it's so absurdly annoying at times you almost want to set the voice volume to zero.

    .
Let me demonstrate. Each accent only has ONE "selected_chivalry" wav in the game files. The other 3 (1.2 and 4) are missing.

'Missing' sound files are a dime a dozen if you go by the file numbering. What is important is the entry in the text files, the more lines the more variety. Given that the supporting TXT files are the same for disk and Steam I can only assume that the mods added sound files as well as lines in the TXT files.

You need to use the 'BBCode full' embed code, not a html one.

Looking in export_descr_sounds_stratmap_voice I do find this entry for your marked sound file:
    Code:
                               vocal Selected_Chivalry
                                        event
                                                 folder data/sounds/Voice/Human/Localized/Camp_Map
                                                      English_General_Selected_Chivalry_1.mp3
                                                      English_General_Selected_Chivalry_2.mp3
                                                      English_General_Selected_Chivalry_3.mp3
                                                      English_General_Selected_Chivalry_4.mp3
                                        end
Which supports your missing file theory. I unpacked my Steam sound files and also had only #3. You would need to find someone with unpacked disk sound files to confirm if it is indeed a Steam issue.
Do keep in mind that default sound files do not get saved in a mod's sound packs, only custom files. In other words even Third Age and The last Kingdoms will have those sound files missing if played on Steam unless they were custom files.

Thanks for your help! Okay, so, I can’t directly confirm this by unpacking a disc version as I don’t have one. But, Legend of Total War said his old videos (one of which was an exploit guide) has the disc game gameplay. AND those videos clearly have the missing voice lines there, it’s easy to hear. That’s the way I know those are from the disc version. Yeah, mentioning those mods was stupid of me, as The Last Kingdoms only uses vanilla game files and Third Age despite having its own independent voice file folder only uses some of the old wavs, not all of them. But yeah, my point stands. That’s a Steam game problem. I only hope someone with the disc version could probably share their Voice folder.

I found my disk and installed the base game from there - and then found the other chivalry files.

By the looks of the file sizes it would seem that voice1 and 3 have more files in them, especially voice3, voice2 is identical.

I am going to do an upload of the strat map voice folder and then will give you info on how to apply it (not going to upload the 1.2GB+ pack files for this...).

Edit: nope, gonna do it different: I'll add the unpacked 'vanilla' sound files to Bare Geomod and then generate the custom pack files. Theoretically these should only contain files that are not present in Steam.
And then unpack those custom pack files and include them in the update for Bare Geomod.

Edit2: seems to work - 1.009 voice files were added (no sfx or music), including animal sound files. See the file listing.

Included in Bare Geomod, will add the files as stand alone resource some time later:

A total of 1.009 strat map voice files (human and animal) have been added in unpacked form, these files were missing from the Steam version of the game, see the file list for details. This list is also available in the data\sounds directory of Bare Geomod.
