    Days of Glory

I saw the trailer just before watching Letters from Iwo Jima. I must say that it looks impressive. It's about the Algerian, Moroccan, and Senegalese who fought under the French flag in WW2. I'm so buying this on DVD when it's released in the US. Pour la France! Chargez!

    Phewie...
That movie was in cinema over here months ago. I missed it somehow, but it received a lot of positive comments. I'd say go for it, I know I'm not going to miss my second chance.
Keep in mind that it will probably compare more to "Jarhead" than to "Black Hawk Down", however.

And I detest the English "translation" of the title. "Indigenes" --> "Days of glory"? We go from a title that depicts what the film is about (discrimination in the French army of indigenous soldiers) to a title that basically sais, "those were the days we didn't have to rename french fries to freedom fries because then the French weren't cowards as much as they are now, even if they let their colonials do the fighting for them" title.

Finally a WWII movie that isn't 110% patriotic American, about GI's storming through a wall of crappy made bullets, killing every Jap and German with their bare hands, with the moral; America rules so beat it Euro-fags, and commies.

Only exception here is Band of Brothers. For some reason it's just so much more realistic, than all the other crapmovies about americans being so damn good at killing everyone else. Oh well how can we blame them... it's all Hollywood!

Interesting. I shall be making the effort to see this in April. En Francais, of course, if anywhere shows it subbed.

I know too little about this subject, I am ashamed to say, and while I hardly usually rely on movies to enlighten me, coming up to my finals I'm somewhat devoid of the time needed to read up as much as I'd like to.

And agreed about Band of Brothers. It did some interesting things its conceptual/stylistic predecessor, Saving Private Ryan, failed to do, like actually show the Germans as human beings too.

    Agreed
It has been surmised, that perhaps, my lord had become like a wild animal that had been kept too long. Perhaps, but whatever... freedom... so long an unremembered dream, was his.

Its nice to see a film from the other side, real nice infact. Yet something is bothering me, why would Algerians and Morrocans fight for France for glory and honor and patriotism if less than ten years later they are plunged into a vicious civil war against the same French government? I always thought the French colonials fought more out of simple duty and force than for love of the French. I could be wrong though.

We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.

Working Americans have been repeatedly seduced at the polls by emotional issues such as the predictable mantra of “God, guns, gays, abortion, and the flag” while their way if life shifted ineluctably beneath their feet." - Senator Jim Webb

Many of the colonial soldiers, particularly the old Great War veterans, felt a bond between them and their French comrades. They were led by French officers and fought alongside French enlistees through Chad, Bir Hacheim, Operation Torch, Sicily, Monte Cassino, Operation Anvil-Dragoon, and the brutal combat around Strasbourg.

Such generalizations, pontifex, have no place in the TWC forums. Sorry.

Many people here would consider that offensive.

Back on topic, I saw this trailer right before Letters from Iwo Jima too, it looks pretty good. I wonder when it's coming out on DVD.

And many would also need to take their insecuirities elswhere.

I forgot when TWC became the haven for those who can't take a joke.

Joke? That was an immature... quip. Not funny in the least. Completely void of intelligence.

And pontifex, please, I'd love for you to say that to a French soldier. I dare you.

Well, I got a good chuckle out of it. If French soldiers are offended by it, it means it's true. If it weren't true, they need not get upset.

We're supposed to be talking about the movie here. One of my professors knows an Algerian who fought for Free France. They took German ears as trophies at Monte Cassino.

And did anybody else see the Panzershreck? This should be good.

I just saw it the other night. If it's playing in your city, I would strongly suggest that you see it. It's one of my favorite WW2 movies now.

    CP_Hicks: you are a pervert, a child-molester and a satanic killer.

None of that is true, of course, but it's still offensive. Same with this.
Pontifexmaximus11 does have a fair point; however, remember that we are talking about the Free French here, not the Vichy regime.
