In my case, how about a movie or a better said a movie franchise on Julius Caesar's campaign in both Gaul and Britain? Of course the movies should not be boring. Also a movie on Marcus Camillus and Gaius Marius.
The movies should be made in a way that the battles are both dramatic and exciting. They should dedicate long scenes in battles. For example I didn't like very much the TV series on Juliu's Caesar, Octavius, Mark Anthony ( from 2005 ) because they dedicated just very little to the battles.

What are the reasons why the movie producers from Hollywood don't make historical movies like that? Lack of ideas?

Doubt you like my choice. But a AH where Athens and Aetolia win (ish) the Lamian war and hold together a Hellenic alliance while the successors fight it out elsewhere. Probably end up being more political than battles. You could even frame it has the fevered dream of say Hyperides as he was being tortured to death.

But if the cause be not good, the king himself hath a heavy reckoning to make, when all those legs and arms and heads, chopped off in battle, shall join together at the latter day and cry all 'We died at such a place; some swearing, some crying for surgeon, some upon their wives left poor behind them, some upon the debts they owe, some upon their children rawly left.

Siege of Syracuse might be interesting. Bit like Troy 2.0.

Lack of ideas, but more importantly lack of knowledge - I'm pretty sure the producers as well as the writers are quite ignorant of history and keep rehashing the same few time periods and characters. And of course they are projecting their ignorance and lack of curiosity onto the general viewerhip.
Also, cost. Battle scenes are crazy expensive, if done right. Witty banter and court drama is cheap. The Rome series you were referencing didn't have that many battle scenes for a reason. And it was still eventually cancelled due to cost.

Maybe another additional reason can be that they are afraid that the movies wouldn't be very profitable.

Ok mate. No problem. I hope your wish becomes true someday.

Hannibal Barca. Apparently Vin Diesel had a stab at it but Hollywood Hollywooded it.

There's such a wealth of material from the epic battles down to the little anecdotes (eg the one in Polybius where his sidekick, called Hannibal "the gladiator", suggests "putting meat back on the menu" during the march to Italy).

Hey, neither Alcibiades nor Eumenes are part of Rome II's time-frame. If we are to take into account the previous centuries as well, then I would say Artaxerxes III. The scene about the pacification of Egypt is a priceless opportunity for embedded marketing about Burger King.

If you consider Rise of the republic, you can add them.

I think Wrath of Sparta is at least partial this timeframe.

Thanks ^. Its been a while playing. I moved my steam installation to a new hard drive that promptly died on me and have had the time to work on it. Box has 5 drives and the one that died is buried deep inside and not easy to get to.

Veering away from war again I would toss in Hellenistic Rhodes as well. A nice political thriller about how the last Greek democracy for all its verve and cunning got curb stomped by Rome when it (Rome) stopped caring about anything but internal power plays.

The life of the Gracchi could also be the background for a nice political drama (Agrarian reform is socialism!), how greed can destroy a society.^^

Could also go with the social war. Marcus Livius Drusus as doomed reformer. One last great effort by the Samnites, and you get Sulla to implement some serious scorched earth mass slaughter victories (kind of his thing)

I second Alcibiades. Would be a great historical epic all around. For an action-comedy however, Rome, Sweet Rome would be tough to beat.

I agree Alcibiades would be good. The twists the turns and an epic death that really almost nobody would see coming.

This is the correct answer. Just imagine the war machines of Archimedes causing trouble for the Romans at sea. Would be a delight to see, in a macabre way of course, but would also tingle every sense I have as a historian.

I like your ideas so far, especially if there was a movie focused on both Marius and Sulla, with Mithridates VI Eupator of Pontus as a major antagonist. The fall of Carthage and Corinth to the Romans in 146 BC, or even Macedon in 168 BC, would be other obvious choices.

The movies should be made in a way that the battles are both dramatic and exciting. They should dedicate long scenes in battles. For example I didn't like very much the TV series on Juliu's Caesar, Octavius, Mark Anthony ( from 2005 ) because they dedicated just very little to the battles.
Now you've lost me. Sure, I'd like a movie that includes plenty of action, but you picked a hell of an example to criticize with HBO's Rome (2005-2007). Admittedly there are only a few battle scenes in the entire show, but it didn't really need more of them with all the top notch intrigue, drama, acting, amazing sets, and smaller moments of violence that moved the plot along, like the assassination of Caesar, Titus fighting temporarily as a gladiator, or the street gang fight between the Aventine collegium against Memmio and the other collegia. A movie shouldn't sacrifice a detailed plot and narrative just for flashy moments of violence, even a war movie focused on a specific conflict. The movie 1917 would be pretty boring and pointless without the character development, for instance.
