Thread: Byzantium Armor Progression

This is a great mod, made me start a byzantine campaign, although I renamed them to "Eastern Roman Empire". One thing about the sheilds, they were supposed to be a mostly one colour for each band (like a roman cohort but for the byzantines), there were designs on them but the sheilds had a single background colour.

I meant that each unit had it's own sheild colour, eg. one unit has blue sheilds, another has white etc. Then they have designs on them, like crosses.

I might try and edit the generals, they look horrible alongside the beautiful general's bodyguards

These are some informations for the classic Byzantine Infantry unit called ''Skoutatoi'', because the shield whish the have called ''skouta''.
In the 10th century they have chainmail armour from horn or metal with head protection too. The Leon ST' said that some skoutatoi had some leather stips up to the armor for extra protection.
They have gaiters and leather gloves and helmet. Leon ST' reports that the first and the last line had gaiters but the Stratigicon manul reports that the first and the second line wear gaiters.
The main weapon was a spear the ''kontario'' of four meters length.
The second weapon was a sword and a axe.
The shield was round. A size of 90 to 120 cm length. with intensely colors.
At the end of the 1080 the majority of the heavy infantry have triangular shield.
The color of the uniforms was blue or red and not pink.

From the 12th century the uniforms have western influences. They have knitted metal thoraxes with difference forms with short sleves and seldom long or even by no means sleves.

Tomorow i shall post some pictures too.

    to be continued...

Whitewolf, do the Byzantines look like they do in the screenshots or is that your progress on them?

    Either way, I'm downloading.

Thank god you got rid of the purple shirts that cover their armour, that was by far the worst addition imo. I can finally play the Byzantines!

Thanks for the info, just one question though what is a "gaiter"? In my next release you can expect the units to look more historically accurate than they were in the last one. I plan to finish up my shield designs, banners and the armored byz units.

Thanks for being patient you guys can expect a release sometime this week I will try and post some screenies between now and then.

Ah thank you much. This is just a little screeny showing some stuff I am playing with at the moment. One is one of the new leather armor design that is pretty much done as well as some varangian shield designs and some banners that I did a while back, (I am redoing them again as I dont like those they are just too simple for me).

Horsearchers alpha is here though it is not completed you will have to tweak it so the background looks right.

It will be very nice to have in the game a cataphract unit like this, but it's little unhistorical. These type of unit ubandoned due to large cost. The last unit of cataphract appears in combat at the battle of Matzikert in 1071.
But i think that an empire with a lot of money can have this unit. With high upkeep ofcource.
Anyway the main cavalry unit is the ''Kavallarioi''. They wear a chainmail armor or thorax from metal or leather parts as it appears in the photo.
They also wear gaiters and leather gloves.
The weapons are a spear up to three meters with a little flag, a bow, a sword and a dagger.
The shield was triangular or round.
The colors of the uniform was different from unit to unit.

The cavalryman with the flag is a standard-bearer of the Kavallarioi unit with the official uniform of the unit.

Well it is only a incomplete tweak I think I saw a post by burrek that he might have done a good tweak. If you do find someone who did tweak it fully let me know.

I like the pattern you did on the cavalry banner

Here are some of my finished banners for infantry and for cavalry.
