Yes, it depends on the types of units, for me. If I have cavalry superiority, my ranged units go in front, otherwise they'll be behind a line of melee units.
If the enemy waits on a hill, I'd look at the terrain. If the enemy has a lot of ranged units, I'd approach in a forested area if I could. I haven't had much success with trying to draw out enemy units and encourage them to move out of a defensive position such as a hill-top, unless I have artillery (or occasionally with horse archers). Have other players been able to do this?
