A Shift of Allegiance (IRL explanation of the RP is below)

Margery Tyrell married King Robert in the Great Sept of Baelor some months ago now, and to all the realm their marriage seems a prosperous one. It was not.

Due to his heavy drinking, and depression at the loss and betrayal of his wife and supposed children, King Robert found himself unable to consumate the marriage. For a time this was acceptable, and Margery did what she could to arouse his passions. However, as time wore on, this became more and more of a problem.

House Tyrell entered into an alliance with House Baratheon with the understanding that Margery and Robert's children would sit the throne. Highgarden have no intention of spending blood and treasure only to see Stannis and his heirs inherit the kingdom.

Finally, Margery came to Robert with a final proposal: his brother Renly would do the deed of impregnating her, and they would announce to the realm that the child was Robert's. A furious Robert flung his wine glass to the wall, shattering it, and raged for a night and a day. Finally, after drinking himself into a stupor he gave his noncommittal assent to the plan. As Margery left his quarters she thought she could hear tears behind her.

While Robert had agreed to cuckold himself for the sake of the alliance, another problem emerged in the form of Stannis. King Robert's brother was honorable to a fault, but he was not stupid. After Renly let some hints slip as to the plan, Stannis confronted his brother and convinced him of it's foolishness. Robert wanted to fight his war, not deal with courtly intrigue, and faced with demands by his wife to remove Stannis from the capitol, and demands by his brother to refuse his wife's requests, Robert dithered.

With a Baratheon-Tyrell heir seeming less and less likely by the day, Queen Margery began to question her purpose in the capitol. It was then that a cleaning boy delivered a secret letter to her, one from a young and vigorous King who would make her his queen in truth, and give her the royal heir she desired.

Having reached her limit, Margery approached Robert asking to return to Highgarden, as she feared capture at the hands of the Dothraki. Hoping that it would put an end to the constant courtly headaches, Robert agreed. However, instead of continuing south to Highgarden, Margery was met by her brother, the Knight of the Flowers, and an honor guard who would escort her to the Stormlands, where her true king awaited.

IRL Explanation:

Basically when the game started I agreed to ally with Baratheon on the condition that Margery marries Robert. What neither me nor Baratheon realized was that she was not able to marry him in-game due to Robert being a widower. By the time I realized this I had already agreed to the alliance so I suggested we have her wed Renly and then make their child Robert's heir. Baratheon agreed, but the next problem was that Renly wasn't Robert's heir, Stannis was. In-game a princess can only marry the faction leader/heir without stealing them. A few months ago we were trying to work out a deal where the admin would mess around with the family trees for us to try and finagle something, but so far nothing has come of those talks, and I wasn't particularly happy with the Renly plan to begin with. I appreciate that Baratheon did his best to try and make the marriage work, but ultimately the only way for Margery to be a proper queen is for her to marry Viserys.

As for the RP explanation of Robert's impotence and Stannis being stubborn, I feel like it's a good explanation for the game's mechanics being what they are, and it fits within the lore. It's also the exact kind of miserable humiliation that GRRM would do to an otherwise nice character like Robert. If someone wants to dispute this RP interpretation they can, but regardless, my reasons for switching sides are as stated above.

I sent most of you personal PMs in-game as well, but the only important note is that we have pledged to House Stark that our armies will not attack theirs unprovoked, nor enter the North. They are free to do what they like, but out of consideration for Willas' marriage to Sansa we shall try to maintain that friendship, as difficult as we expect that to be under the circumstances.

Bantu has chosen to leave this hotseat, he is unhappy with the decision to allow Tyrell to switch sides and also has real life issues.

We will need a new Baratheon player. If anyone is interested in the spot or know someone that is interested let me know. It is a fairly tough spot so would recommend a decently experienced player.

EDIT: I may have someone that would take it. That player has been sent the save and told me he would look at it this evening.
