    Default The Potato-Thread

Hi, in this thread you can post your own potatoes.

The potatoes should not be shown with cheese, as that's ing disgusting, and for cheese + disgusting things, the "Say Cheese"-Thread already exists.

I start with two snapshots, one stolen from Google, the other one lovely shot by myself. Very tasty. And healthy. <3

    the most German-Irish thread ever

anyways, I live close to what is considered to be the capitol of potatoes, they even have an annual "Sagra della Patata" http://www.leonessa.org/2004/patata/patata.htm (sorry, no english version).

However, the word "patata" in Italian does have a clear sexual connotation, Dude bless me that TWC has some rigid rules on this, or I would be derailing this thread VERY BADLY

    I googled.

You are very nasty boys. Although i struggle to understand, why potatoe. In german plum has the same meaning, but if you have cut the plum in two parts and remove the pip, it makes sense.

If potatoes actually were alive and had legs, it would be so much more fun to peel and boil (or bake) them.

Which reminds me how terrible American mashed potatoes are. But even Germans are losing their ways. Proper German mashed potatoes require nutmeg (Muskat). It is the key ingredient. Oregano (Majoran) may be added as well. But don't you dare adding any butter (yes, I'm talking to the Americans here).

I add always nutmeg, salt and pepper to it. And little, little bit butter (fat is a highway for taste)

Sorry Polish - you keep your nutmeg out out of proper mashed potatoes. Bring on the butter, sour cream, cream and pepper and salt. Of course that can very you need them more dry to stuff in a pierogi. Nutmeg is for drinks and Pasta dishes with a cheese sauce or spice cakes and bread.

Okay, I will share a very special "delicacy" of my country. It is called rubber potato. In our national languages either kumiperuna (Finnish) or gummipotatis (Swedish).

This is something that generations of Finns have eaten several times a week in kindergartens, schools, military bases and the like, as it is customary in Finland to have free communal meals in government intitutions instead of bringing lunchboxes or ordering something off a cafeteria menu.

The specialty of rubber potato is that it has this rubbery consistency and lack of flavor. Althout it has been peeled (usually by a machine), it develops a kind of new skin that is even more rubbery than the middle and usually has a bit darker, dull matte color. I have never been able to make those myself at home, and I suspect that some kind of secret government procedure is involved.

Rubber potatos are usually served with slime sauce (limakastike in Finnish, limsås in Swedish) of varying colors such as brown or green. The sauce usually contains something resembling meat, but it is often hard to tell what animal it is supposed to be.

Let's say that it is an acquired taste. By acquired I mean that it works when you do not have an alternative and have been guilt tripped day in day out about starving children in Africa.

I actually kind of liked the food in public institutions and later on appreciated the fact that those kinds of things are shared in our system regardless of anyone's family's wealth (no private schools either in the strict sense). Mutual formative experiences across the entire generation can be a valuable thing.

But slime sauces would not impress dinner party guests of any of you civilized nations, I am sure. Wouldn't serve a bowl to that big enforcer-like guy that Flinn dines with, I can tell you that much.

Hmm, in german public institutions you would always have the choice between some cheap dishes like pea soup or potatoe salad with sausages, but you would not be forced to eat some not tasting rubber potatoes.^^ Poor families get free school lunchs too.
