Default The Pope has no power

I find this an annoying part of the game. Sure they can excommunicate you and they can give you the odd 1000 florins now and again but they have no real power. Sometimes when I attack england with scotland I get a warning from the pope. However I attack them anyway and take there cities, greatly bolstering my empire. When I get excommunicated there is no revolts no unhappiness to my catholic people???? nothing really bad happens. I might get the odd crap general who I never use dessert me.
I don't feel the popes word carries alot of weight in this game as it should??

    Anyone agree??

No. Follow the Pope. And I say this being a proud atheist! It brings you lots of benefits, as well as other nations' support.

I now what you meen but if I was never to annoy the pope then i would never expand my empire
I have been excommunicated at least 5 times now and as a result i have taken 6 or 7 english and polish cities. I am currently the strongest nation. All I really need to do now is wait for him to die and a new pope will welcome me back.

I really cannot see any bad in getting excommunicated at all

I agree. The Pope should call a crusade on you if you are not obediend, but so if you get excomunicated its virtualy the same thing. And the pope is much to easy to bribe,if you give him 4000 florins he will forget all what you done.

Completely agreed. Immediately, it looks as though being excommunicated makes little difference. But you suffer order problems due to it, you're likely to get a crusade called on you if you've pissed off too many people, and the other nations will likely go into "feeding frenzy" mode against you now that you no longer have the pope's protection. Additionally, pious generals will become discontent with a faction leader that has been excommunicated, so you may see a drop in loyalty from your more observant generals. Reconciling with the pope is also fairly difficult to do, and very expensive. It's better to avoid it altogether.

If you get excommunicated you get increeased unrest in your lands and crusades will be called against you, as well as many catholic factions declaring war on you.

If you're excommed and you're already a huge happy empire then sure, you can sustain the blow. It'll probably just slow you down. However being excommed the Pope doesn't just reconcile you if you throw money at him, suddenly you have to adopt a whole new 'take over the College of Cardinals' strategy, at least that's what I had to do. I had to re-think my priorities because I didn't want to be excommed forever and the Papacy was hitting me with its military might. Well I could have defended against that forever, but truth is I didn't want to have to (very tedious) and besides I like people to like me Anyways the Papacy certainly doesn't have "no power". If you get excommed early I can imagine it would be quite detrimental.

    @Metellus

How on earth did you take over the College of Cardinals when you were excommunicated? I've never been excommunicated but I just can't imagine that the Pope who excommunicated you would elect several of your priests to the College. Please enlighten me as I'm sure to get excomm'd sooner or later.

You can expand your Empire. Why don't you use the time the Pope has demanded from you to build up and, only then, blitzkrieg the English?

Ye thats exactly what I do. When I get excommed I try and hit them with absolutely everything in that time. Even when I am welcomed back and I see a weak english city I am gony take it everytime. My armies are so strong now that the pope bows down to me lol

My finance is not the best, I organise my armies around it so I am never in debt but only just making a profit every year. I am currently making between 700 and 1000 profit each turn which is not good. I make 70 odd thousand per turn but the expenses for my army and wages use most of that.
I usually find myself bullying other nations for money lol. I use the "give me or I will slaughter you" option. It works most of the time

that will be either because you are miles away from them and pose no immediate threat or because they are bankrupt and therefore IMPOSSIBLE to give you it.
i get the odd knock back from money. I forced england to cough up 2500 florins

mate take the excommunication by the Pope and stick a fair sized fleet in the English channel to prevent any Crusade armies getting to the mainland while you have breakfast in London , then just wait until the "Soap on a rope" dies and everyones a winner, 'cept the English.

I positioned 3 of my armies on their last city and they bordered 7 of my castles. And BTW they are milan which means they have "extreme" wealth. I say give me 100 florins or i will rape your wifes and daughters very nicely. And they aren't my enemy....YET. We're still neutral but then i tought: why waste all that wealth? So i'm protecting milan from attacks....FOR NOW. And all i'm asking is 100 florins...and they say: NO! You must think us fools or worse!! If someone doesn't tell me how to bully a nation to give me money then i'll have to wipe milan off the map and rape their cute daughters.

Well that is strange, remember it is their ruler who makes that decision. Some rulers are more mean and stubborn than others. You will find that some nations and rulers will give you money in a second in your situation

Well maybe they know they are on their way out and do not want to give in to bullies. They might have alot of pride. Believe me though you can dorce nations to pay up. I have done it many times, although i do get a knock back sometimes
