Default Thierry Baudet, leader of the far right FDV party in Netherlands resigns after some FDV members make antisemitic comments

    https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2020/1...-party-leader/

Thierry Baudet has resigned as leader of far right party Forum voor Democratie and will not lead the party into the 2021 general election. Baudet made the announcement in a video message on Monday evening, in which he blamed the media for the party’s current troubles. Several leading members of far-right party Forum for Democracy’s youth wing were suspended at the weekend in a long-running row over racism and anti-semitism on internal message boards. One is thought to be a 23-year-old student of political communications who was quoted saying ‘Jews have international paedophile networks and usher large numbers of women into pornography’. In another message he expressed the view that ‘National-Socialism had the best economic formula ever.’ Baudet had announced an internal inquiry to be led by FvD senator Paul Cliteur and Wybren van Haga, an independent MP who joined the party last month and is on its list of candidates for next year’s general election. But the move was criticised as ‘too little, too late’ by senator and Amsterdam city councillor Annabel Nanninga, who called for a ‘total clear out’ of the JFvD organisation. A number of other prominent party members, including the party’s other MP Theo Hiddema, supported Nanninga’s line. Inquiry In his video, Baudet said he did not understand the fact that others would not wait for the results of the inquiry. ‘We are now threatening to throw people under a bus before we know what has happened,’ he said. Baudet said his action was taking ‘ultimate political responsibility’. ‘Hopefully, this will stop all this nonsense definitively,’ he said. The MP and party founder said he would be happy to take the ceremonial position of last place on the list of candidate MPs for the general election – which makes it likely he would be elected – and did not mention relinquishing his role on the party’s executive board. Chris Alberts, who is an expert on the party, told television current affairs show Nieuwsuur on Monday evening that Baudet has not left the party and will still be a prominent member. ‘Baudet likes to keep things vague… but you could say that what he has done is purely for show,’ he said. Right-hand man Later on Monday evening it was reported that Freek Jansen, Baudet’s right-hand man and number 7 on the party’s list of candidate MPs had given up his place as a potential MP. However it is unclear whether he had actually quit or not. Jansen set up the FvD youth wing and works for Baudet and Hiddema in parliament. He helped write Baudet’s controversial ‘Minerva’s owl’ speech after last year’s provincial elections and is said to have organised Baudet’s meeting with American alt right figurehead Jared Taylor, among others. Senior party officials are meeting to discuss the situation on Monday evening. In 2019, FvD emerged as the biggest party in the country after the provincial elections but since then its fortunes have collapsed, amid allegations of anti-semitism, racism and internal disputes. According to the latest polls, the party will win no more than five parties in the March general election.

Man. This is a common mistake with the far right in Europe. If you stick in islamophobia you can even become prime minister. Thierry Baudet's whole carrier was built on islamophobia and he could have become the next prime minister(he had won the 2019 provincial elections). But some stupid comments from his party members forced him to resign.

To be fair I've said much worse on Discord and in person. Though people could learn something from Trump. You don't resign. You deny, deny, and double down. It works.

I don't understand why the leader should resign if members made stupid comments. Those people should be kicked out and that's that.

Why ruin the vibes? Anti-semitic jokes are all fun and games, until the press gets ahold of them.

I propose we need to find a new way to judge politicians on. We don't judge them on their actions, we barely judge them on their words.
How are we to decide who's to lead our countries further downhill if we can't take them by their frequently changing words?

I suggest we make a Wheel of Fortune style show to arbitrarily decide what to do with politicians. At this point there aren't any good ones left in the high tiers of society so they are all guilty in some way. That way we get some entertainment whil the ship goes down.

As someone who has been spending the last 18 months in dealing with "politicians" I confirm this. People have a very short memory, they are easily distracted and they tend to forgive everything as long as their new need is fulfilled.

If he resigned over something so emblematic of the far-right ethos, doesn't that prove he was never far-right?

What you need to understand about the Dutch political system is that it is comparatively easy to gain a seat in Parliament. One only needs a little over 60k votes nation wide. It is something eminently doable for anyone who is of interest to the media. But while this is comparatively easy, it is a lot harder to become fully established. Baudet's party is exhibiting failures we've seen before, with Pim Fortuyn's party and the Seniors party 50+ and probably more that died before they even got started. Failures that are almost bound to happen whenever a party crystallizes around one individual of great electoral appeal.

Lacking trustworthy henchmen, party positions and seats are filled with the inexperienced, the underqualified, the opportunistic and the vain. We're typically talking about defectors from other parties, often at lower levels of government, minor celebrities, people from lower tiers of civil service and business people. It really is just a matter of time before the whole thing blows apart. This is especially true for the right wing populist corner: after all, how do you keep people in line when your very raison d'etre is to vocally challenge authority, often in the crudest of terms.

Indeed, the only way to start a party like this is to rule it with an iron fist, like Wilders has done. But Wilders was a veteran politician when he started the PVV. He was not going to make the mistake to think that because people seemed to believe in him, they would need you need no policing. And even then, despite seemingly being a stable presence in Dutch politics, as a party, the PVV still has to prove it can survive a change in leadership. Of all the attempted new parliamentary parties of the past 30 years, only the Socialist Party has really passed that test.

FvD is crumbling. Baudet and the board of the party are fighting over access to party headquarters, social accounts. All over the country state representatives are resigning. 4 out of 10 senators have resigned. At the moment, it looks like Baudet may still regain control of the party, just because everyone else is leaving.

As it turns out there's a lot more to this exodus than a few rotten apples in the party's youth branch that Baudet did not want to expell before an investigation was completed. During a meeting of candidates for the upcoming elections about campaign strategy, the illusion that Baudet represents a reasonable alternative to Geert Wilders evaporated completely.

One of those present reported the following in a letter she wrote to the board about Baudet's behaviour. Amongst other things, this letter states that according to Baudet:

    - "nearly everyone I know is an anti-semite"
    - people who deny the holocaust in an open app group are not being stupid. "They have a very high IQ, that's why they say these things".
    - corona was created by Soros and others "who I cannot name because you'd be calling me antisemitic"
    - a lot of people who voted for Forum last time don't really belong with the party because they are too stupid.
    - corona would succeed where Hillary Clinton "and the pedofiles" failed (achieve 'world domination')
    - it's not worth campaigning on immigration, because "once they have taken our freedom and we're a Communist state, they will kick all the stupid Negroes out anyway"

Why are they still so concerned about Jews today? Do they actually encounter any in daily life or just imagine those to be horned monsters?
