Default Roman Emperor Project from Daniel Voshart

I stumbled upon this while looking for other stuff, it was a pleasant find

This young artist spent his free time during quarantine for this special project: "Using the neural-net tool Artbreeder, Photoshop and historical references" he "created photoreal portraits of Roman Emperors. For this project" he "transformed, or restored (cracks, noses, ears etc.) 800 images of busts to make the 54 emperors of The Principate (27 BC to 285 AD).".

Here you can find the original work; you can navigate the project and the page by using the index on the right.

Personally I think he did an amazing work, worth your time for checking it

I'm not sure if the computer did the job right, Florianus seems to suffer from some compression issues...

Yep, I saw this on Twitter not long ago and had to start following Dan Voshart because of it. Pretty awesome stuff. My personal favorite is Probus, who definitely looks like his surviving bust. Really brings him to life, although without the idealistic nature of imperial portraiture, including wrinkles and a few pockmarks. The Romans actually did include things like warts and wrinkles and missing teeth in highly realistic sculpted portraits, but you tend not to see those things for emperors. Even when Augustus was aging and becoming elderly he was still depicted as his younger self in sculpted portraiture.

LOL. Everyone on Twitter was saying how Vespasian looks like US president LBJ, and it's kind of true, although I always thought he looked like the Italian American actor Frank Loggia.

    Great find!

I'm not a big coin collector, but am lucky enough to own a little piece of Roman Imperial history. It's a solid silver Denarius from early in Hadrian's reign--minted in Rome around 119-123 AD (CE). At almost 1900 years, it's probably the oldest man made object I have. Of course it's a profile, but it compares favorably with some of the busts I have seen and even with the portrait shown above.

Along with having a wall built across Britain, Hadrian was the 3rd of the so called Five Good Emperors

As you can see, it's about the same diameter as a US dime--only about 50% heavier due to the thickness from the high profile of Hadrian. The emperor is depicted with a beard which has worn down a bit.

The reverse side depicts Hadrian shaking hands with Felicitas (Goddess of happiness or blessedness)

    Cheers

So, this begs the obvious question:

Who is the sexiest Roman Emperor?

Augustus went full Putin. Never go full Putin.
    Vespasian= Colm Meany (Mile's O'Brien Star Trek)
Claudius is an aged Jeremy Renner.
Claudius Gothicus looks to my dim eyes more like George Baker (who played Tiberius in I, Claudius).

    Lovely idea, very humanising.

Augustus and Hadrian. Caligula looks like Joffrey from Game of Thrones.

Hey don't mess with Vespasian, he is my emperor (we even come from the same small town ); the resemblance between Titus and his brother Domitian is really impressive.. you know, good old alfa genes I suppose

Perhaps Italy could learn from him and introduce a toilet tax to renovate the state budget.^^

    Pecunia non olet

One of my favorite Roman lines, it's so damned true

Here in Italy as well we make fun of Vespasian(o), but he was a great emperor, he literary saved the empire and made some important changes that got it trough for another century or so.. he was a self-made man, rude and honest as any alpha-male should be.. he built the Coliseum (among many other things)... and was a good general as well (maybe not as great as others, but he did his part, that's granted).

But the best part about him was his character and the way he remained simple and attached to his roots: it is said that he never wanted to punish his political opponents ("I will not kill the dog that barks at me"), he disbanded 4 Legions (yes 4!) because they dishonored themselves, he was always ironic and he disliked sycophants.. so he was indeed a Farmer Emperor, very pragmatic and interested only to concrete results.
It is said that when he realized that he was dying he said "Vae, puto deus fio" ("I'm afraid I'm turning into a god") and that he wanted to die while standing, because this is how a Emperor should die. Funniest part though is that the legend says that the main cause of his death was an indigestion (probably of beans, still a very popular food in our agricultural region!), coupled with excessive cold drinks (either water or wine).. however, that's the kind of death one can expect from a 70 years old farmer, not an emperor.
He died in his Villa in the Terme di Cotilia, a place still existing, where I usually go once per week to eat a Porchetta sandwich and drink a ice cold beer.. some things simply do not change!

He was the right man to repair the mess after the drama queen and lyra player Nero.

yes pretty much the opposite of Nero

However, I do think that Marcus Aurelius looks very much like an ante litteram Dude

Don't believe the fake news media, there were very fine people on both sides, i.e. Julio-Claudian dynasty and the Flavian dynasty.

Also, ancient aliens built the Colosseum and everything else these white people supposedly built. *Mic drop* *stage dive* *nose bump*

Whenever historians start to bring up sexual depravity regarding Roman Emperors I'm always a bit skeptical

Well obviously the unofficial first one JC. Man was not prude like his adopted heir (or rather not a hypocrite) and frankly a better general. Just really needed a hard core wing man and not forget to take him to every event.
