Thread: Low Cavalry Weight

    Default Low Cavalry Weight

Is it a choice? In reality you mostly read cav, chariot etc. charges to be way more destructive in battles. Is it done this way to make the game a bit harder since the hammer & anvil strategy is pretty obvious to use and AI really sucks on battle ai?

If you would read sources, frontal charges were not a common thing due to lack of destructive power of them in battles. Even Parthian cataphracts noticed how little effect their charges were against Romans at Carrhae so they changed tactic to first try to spread Romans out with ranged attack and then charge in before they close in ranks again or try to pick off people that break out of formation. Lethal frontal charges would be more related to medieval and later cavalry.

Current unit weights are not based on real values, just a way to make them work in how game calculates stuff, like for cavalry mass is main part of their charge damage and not charge bonus. Also prior to change, you could disengage cavalry without taking any casualties and basically getting free wins.

Makes sense but when i charge from behind the enemy lines it still feels very very weak and has no routing power whatsoever.

What cavalry are you using and what unit are you charging? Low tier cav charging elite infantry are obviously not going to insta route them. On the flip side, I play the seleucids quite heavily, and when their heavier cavalry rear charges units, they generally route unless they are elite.

Depends on what is charging what, plus how exhausted unit is.

Also one thing I noticed is that most people who had issues with cavalry charges were using mods that were not yet updated for 1.2.6 like Alternative Pike Phalanx. For example if you have that submod, it would cause all units to have 3 times more HP.
