This is a SFW as well as amended and expanded version of something I put in our DND discord for anyone interest to follow along and get a synopsis of how our first official session went:

WATERDEEP MYSTERY

CHAPTER 1: The Mystery Begins

Open in North Ward. Silent Shield Tavern.


Party:


Varis Aloro, Chaotic Good Paladin, Half-Elf, 28 years of age: escaped slave and former Calimport Gladiator. Paladin with an oath of Vengeance on slavers and a desire to do good by the less fortunate, but whose pursuit of these goals are often harmed by bouts of depression and drunkenness over his past. Recent arrival to Waterdeep in search of his lost love, who he lost contact with when sold from Luskan to Calimport 12 years ago.


Harminil of House Finderwel, True Neutral Battle Master, High Elf, 120 years of age: Noble and former soldier with residence in Waterdeep. Painter and wild card with deep-rooted sense of High Elven Supremacy and an insatiable desire for high elven women. Seeks to hone his skills in combat so that one day he may reclaim the Jeweled Crown of his ancestors that was stolen by a demonic entity long ago and restore his house’s and personal sense of superiority. Prior experience serving with the mercenary Varragh il Sunayn during his military service.


Varragh il Sunayn, Chaotic Neutral Mastermind, Fey Elf, 186 years of age: Descendant of a house of hunters turned traffickers who straddled the border between Toril and the Feywild. Rogue, Hunter and survivor with an imperative to retake and restore her family’s power, even if guilted by the means that acquired that power. Will keep the party on track and has a no-nonsense attitude when dealing with the commoners, or even potential enemies, who get in her way. Prior experience serving with the soldier Harminil through her time as a mercenary:

Evander “the Commander” Evenwood- Sgt. in Waterdeep Guard, known associate of Harminil and Varragh. Currently investigating missing prisoners, missing guard Holdfast Strongbow. Love of Varis' life Lia might be involved among prisoners whose disappearance he has noted.

William “Billy” Castigan: Drinking, Endshift Tavern NE Field Ward, no info of value received

Oliver Queenan: Former Sgt., now-postal worker Zephyr's Post-> meeting at Silent Shield, details missing watchmen who spoke up on irregularities Holdfast Strongbow and Gilbert Brick

Edmund Exley: Artist/moron, Shrines of Natures south of Gerin's Bread (blind father’s business). Too stupid to realize Harminil ed him up in painting contest he didn't realize he was partaking in, little info of value

Jack “little Jack” Vincennes: Apprentice, House of Fine Carvers. Provided info involving Popovich's ouster and irregularities in guard to Varis. Turned off by the questioning and requested Varis not return to the House of Fine Carvers.

Sergei Illestrad: Shopkeep, lives with wife at Revelay's Elegant Headware selling luxurious clothing. Varragh and Harminil used previous painting from Edmund encounter as anniversary present deception to enter home and steal letter, leaving on bad terms. Letter is magically wiped of contents.

After Investigations of Guards:

Party: Return to Evander, Varragh/Harminil learn Popovich is in same tavern. Varis gets drunk and harasses two hoodlums who may be involved in planning some sort of heist. Aforementioned meeting with Queenan goes down.

“Mace Windu” the bartender gets mad at attempts to break down doors to see Popovich, eventually lets party into room where they find decaying, dead body of Popovich, personal items which are looted, and another empty letter.

Harminil gets into brawl with shopkeep who cannot answer for corpse in his establishment and eventually goes for lethal blows after initially fighting for incpaacitation; Varis heals shopkeep who is bleeding out. Varragh threatens him with blackmail over murders within his establishment and inability to answer for how this could have happened.

What to do with shopkeep and handling situation/potential blackmails?


What is the status of the two hoodlums and their planned bank heist?


How is the party to reveal the contents of the letters and reveal the deeper mystery at Waterdeep?


Is Evander in Danger? Are any of previously interrogated guards in danger?


Who murdered the out of Popovich days ago, and how?


How far up does this conspiracy go?


Will Varis get his ale and to party with Halflings? How many men will Varragh attempt to seduce or threaten while consistently failing her rolls? How many pure-blooded women will Harminil attempt to sexually harass with paintings while spouting genocidal racism?

CHAPTER 2: A Murder and a Heist

“Mace Windu” The Unnamed Silent Shield Bartender: Owner of the establishment, keeper of secrets and apparently terrible at keeping his patrons alive

“Bucket Man” The Unnamed Endshift Tavern Bartender: Crazy old bastard, loves Varis simply for tanking an entire bucket of beer and paying generously, thinks Harminil is trouble due to his habit of starting unnecessary fights and racial hatred

Rose Mayfleet: Elderly magical halfling professor whose defenses are impregnable to the deviant charms of young elven flesh

Gnomish Meat Peddler: Angry when hooligans block his stall from attracting customers

Daratha: Sociopathic human racist brigand who is constantly trying to fight people for no reason to an even worse extent than Harminil and has way too many boyfriends

Investigating the Empty Letters:

We open to the aftermath of our party’s previous session, which ended with them finding the body of a potential contact dead in a room inside the Silent Shield. Perplexed and unsatisfied with the barkeep’s explanation, Harminil had attacked, eventually with intent to kill after being struck himself. Varis decided to heal ol’ Mace’s wounds while Varragh looked on in amazement at the absurdity of the situation. The party now stands over the furious but also confused bartender.

After some haggling, including many repetitions of Harminil’s now classic vague command, “Speak up”. The group agrees to leave the establishment with the possibility of blackmailing the bartender over the murder within his establishment should he report the events to the authorities.

Varis uses Detect Magic to determine Illusory magic has been used to mask the contents of the letters, while Harminil, being a resident of the city, recalls the Mayfleet Institute for the Ethical Use of Magic exists within the city walls. Varis informs the others of the shadowy figures and the bank heist he overheard in the Silent Shield before they leave. Harminil knows the Sword Coast Traders’ Bank operates within the city and informs the group it is the potential target of such a heist as they travel to the Institute in the Castle Ward.

Upon entering the Institute Tower, Varragh steers the constantly inebriated Varis away from the first-floor restaurant and bar. The group climbs the tower, finds Rose Mayfleet’s office and walks inside without knocking. Inside is an elderly halfling who is unmoved by both Harminil’s and Varis’ attempts to seduce her into undoing the illusions. Harminil states to the party he will attack the elderly woman if she attempts to double cross them. After some haggling and Varis’ offer to work in her soup kitchen the group only gets the price down to 3,000 gold.

On the way out of the tower, Varragh tries to intervene in Varis’ attempts to reach the bar and fails miserably, as he displays his withdrawal shakes to argue that he NEEDS this. Harminil spends this period while the other two argue over Varis’ drinking painting a glorious painting of great technical skill but lacking the name recognition to sell at high prices, depicting elvish warriors.

The group goes to the Great Market to sell this painting with Varis bluffing that Harminil is a famed painter. Varis jumps on a roof and begins a speech highlighting Harminil as a famed painter while mostly falling on his ass, until the watchmen force him down. The group attempts the plan again with Varragh this time sweeping through the crowd using her speech and language skills to pretend to be different members of the crowd bidding on the painting. The party’s scam gets a wealthy Dwarven bidder who offers 55 gold, but they proceed to stupidly and overconfidently outbid the Dwarf from Varragh without being able to attract another buyer.

The group then finds another space on the far end to execute the scam again, with Varis setting up for his speech right in front of a gnomish meat stall, with the owner getting increasingly angry and eventually attacking him. Varis easily overtakes the pissed off gnome and talks the guards down. The devious Varragh spends this entire scene picking pockets from onlookers before the group begins the scam again. This time, Varragh and Harminil sell the painting for 50 gold, which is eventually partially split. Varis follows with a speech celebrating the meat cart and partially succeeds in luring customers to appease the angry gnome.

Investigating the Heist:

The group knows the heist is now their only path to acquiring the gold needed to afford Mayfleet’s services. The group returns to Endshift, where the bartender is friendly towards Varis and offers information on the hoodlums, while Varis spots the woman he had seen earlier at the Silent Shield.

Despite attempts at friendliness towards her, Daratha is revealed as a super racist psycho who somehow actually begins combat with Harminil before he himself could do so, stabbing his foot before being knocked the out while the crowd clears out. The bartender helps the party pull Daratha out the back and covers for them. The group tends to her bloody wounds and as dictated by the Mastermind Varragh decides their best next course of action to avoid the guards is to Weekend at Bernie’s a woman they beat unconscious all the way across the city to Harminil’s residence. Halfway through the trashy field ward some other hoodlums threaten the group, to which Varis replies “You don’t want to fight us, you want to go home and rethink your life”, prompting the thugs to retreat. With Varragh’s reassurance to the guards, the group is able to bull their way to Harminil’s home.

There, they reawaken a woman dealing with a potential severe head injury with some casual slaps before remembering the should have tied her up first. They learn details of the planned heist through interrogation, to occur in 7 days on the 15^th while the bank is at its lowest security due to having transferred much of its assets that day. Despite her and Harminil trading racial barbs, the group allows her to go by untying her and escorting her blindfolded near the north gate. The party now knows the heist plan and will be ready to partake in one week.

What the has Evander and the prison mystery been up to while this happens?

How can we be part of this heist without being betrayed by an elf-hating woman we just beat the out of and kidnapped?

Can the Endshift bartender or any other potential allies be of any help?

Can Harminil or Varragh’s city watch contacts be of any assistance?

How much longer can Varragh put up with Varis’ and Harminil’s idiocy? Why did their attempts to seduce little old Rose Mayfleet fail?

How much money will we steal and how will we distribute any excess funds if we succeed?
