    Default Historical Toponymy Project

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    When first beginning this project I was ignorant of many things regarding language (I still am, tbqh), but the newest version is much much more reliable and I have spent 9 months researching 3000+ historical names for people like myself who enjoy this kind of thing.

    Here is a direct download link:
    https://www.mediafire.com/file/6ddzg...my_Mod.7z/file
    Here is most of the names:
    https://www.mediafire.com/file/der0w...on_4.xlsx/file

    Anyone can use these in their mod, just credit me. Thanks.

    Hi Cephalore,
    this is really impressive!
    A few thoughts:
    - it is really good if you provide the sources and the time period when the name was used. The tradition of the names is quite important, eg. Ghorsium is the ancient (Roman Empire) name for todays village of Tac, just next to Szekesfehervar.
    - some names have problems with coding, esp for this sign: Ã*
    - in case you haven't noticed: in the threads for the relevant factions there's a special entry to for the names of the settlements (well, until now for a very limited number of settlements but the intention is to develop it in the future).
    - in the SSHIP 097 there's an extended section with name changes, eg:
    Code:
    ;------------------------------------------------------------------------------  TURKU
       monitor_event GeneralCaptureSettlement SettlementName Turku
            and CharacterReligion catholic

            change_settlement_name Turku Abo

            if not IsFactionAIControlled
                historic_event SETTLEMENT_NAME_CHANGE
            end_if

        end_monitor

        monitor_event GeneralCaptureSettlement SettlementName Turku
            and not CharacterReligion catholic

            change_settlement_name Turku Turku

    Default Re: Mostly 'authentic' Toponymy/Place names

    Jurand,
    Thank you for your feedback. I apologize for the sloppiness of my post; I will remedy it soon. Yes, the sources are quite important as I am trying to use toponyms contemporary to the 12th century. I apologize for not being rigorous in listing my sources for each name. Unfortunately, many names have eluded me in the Medieval Greek sources. Other names I was forced to source from later or earlier periods. The majority of the Greek literature is confined to the Alexiad (12th century), De Administrando Imperio (10th century), and various Latin/Greek side by side translations of the so called Chrysobulls. I also used the Madaba Map (6th century), Nicetas Choniates (12-13th century) Byzantine historian, Laskaris Kananos (15th?) who is rare to find around the internet, and most helpful of all for all matters Byzantine is The Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium. I have unfortunately lost much of the names I translated/transliterated for the Medieval Greek. I am by no means a linguist, so I deserve little credit other than my efforts sorting through texts in foreign languages and cross referencing those findings with English or Latin texts and other sources to verify authenticity.

    As for the German, it is incredibly difficult to use proper names because of low/high German and dialectical differences. I had opted to using historical atlases which is much easier than surfing literature as I did with the Greeks - which took a painstaking amount of time. So, the credibility and the subjectiveness of the German place names are 'approximate' at best, but that is really the work of Gustav Droysen, Karl Spruner von Merz and Heinrich Theodor Menke. You can find their work at

    I will edit the original post with a barebones translit. so the coding doesn't muck up.

    I would love to implement this feature of settlement name changes for you guys, but I no nothing about scripting. I tried to add one myself, but it wouldn't work. Is it possible to make the
    script "CharacterFaction German" instead of by religion?

    I am working on the Arabic transliteration right now.. primarily using Idrisi's map replica in the Library of Congress. The map is from the appropriate time period.

    Thanks again for the feedback and if possible, if I can get the script to work off of factions instead of religion then I will be happy to implement it for you. But, I am a tech and linguistic noob so fair warning lol.

    These are great- but remember, the transliteration of B to V is a modern Greek thing, not ancient. For example, Βαβυλῶνος, which you've rendered as Vavylonos, should be Babylonos.

    @Cephalophore: you definitely deserve credit! This is impressive!

    The name changing is pretty straightforward and I usually add in the file guidance for modders to make their changes. Eg. in the script.txt you may find a Table of contents at the begining and then explanation.
    See below examples of how to do it without religion concerns. You need to use the internal codes for factions.

    Code:
    ;===============================================================================================
    ;======================================================================================================
    ;---- SETTLEMENTS CAPTURED & NAME CHANGES ----------------------------------------------
    ;======================================================================================================
    ; if you add a name in this script, remember to add it also in the expanded.txt (and leave the last line empty!)
    ; if you add a "historic_event" you must add the relevant entry in the "historic_events.txt"
    ; for some cities there's a special notification and pics used (see below eg Wroclaw) - this may be copied also to the other cities. However, if in the future many such entried would be added then they may get too burdensome for the players - so think about it.
    ; a willing modder could also make movie files (.bik) for certain great cities (eg. Constantinople, Kiev, Cairo, Baghdad) to provide more immersion for the players

    Default Mostly 'authentic' Toponymy/Place names (German, Greek, Arabic)

    The most approximate medieval Arabic toponyms are compiled below roughly by the source in which I extracted the transliterations. The German methods use -ia where others would use -iyyah, K and Q are also interchangeable. I hope that these will be useful for those that wish to use proper toponyms in their campaigns. If you have alternative sources or suggestions or corrections, please, I appreciate feedback. I will work on implementing settlement name changes into the script and inshallah (hopefully) I wll be succesful. These place names are applicable to the following factions: Almoravids, Fatimids, Abbasids, and Zengids. I am ignoring Oghuz Turkic and Mozarabic for the Zengids and Almoravids, respectively. The work for these would be too scarce to be impactful, I believe.

    I have found no further medieval records of the settlements relative to this task so I have taken it upon myself to transliterate the Arabic names from wikipedia and elsewhere to the best of my ability. To be as realistic as possible, in my opinion, I have transliterated from the historic latin names where applicable because the early Islamic geographers were heavily influenced by Ptolemy. I would use the Peri Reis map, but (1) it is ottoman turkish (2) from the 16th century (3) I cant find a translation of it aside from descriptions included in it of any settlements in English, Latin, French, German, or Spanish, etc.

    I gave up after I approached Western Europe because the names either do not exist in Medieval Greek records, I got lazy, bored, etc.
    Asteriks are used for those in which I was pseudo-transliterating, I think. I made this awhile back so I do not recall the details.

    The Old French - including a portion of Franco-Venetian, Anglo-Norman, and Middle French is listed here alphabetically (in-game files) for all settlements. The sources are more exhaustive than I have listed; many songs, poems, etc. as well as maps, chronicles, histories, and fictional/secular literature. I will add these to French and Crusader states eventually, but they are here for manual use...
    Asterisks are pseudo translations

    The problem with the SSHIP and the Armenian names is that we don't have an Armenian faction - only Georgian :-)

    Both spoilers appear to be settlement names:

    From first spoiler, blue is me
    Smolcence -- Smolensk
    Smirnie -- Smyrna
    Speier -- Speyer

    Second spoiler
    Hrrom -- Rome
    Soraket -- Shiraz
    Sewast -- Sives
    T'awrez -- Tabriz

    Oh jeez, I cannot believe I made that mistake. In my defense some of these place names are indeed from the Georgian Chronicles

    @Gigantus
    Yes, they are indeed settlement names - my ongoing project is to provide settlement names with historically proper names for each faction. You got those three correct!

    Should I merge both threads for you? This would be easier for the players, I think. It will be in the Mini Mods page.

    If you want to... I don't mind. It would be easier for them, yeah.
