    It's certainly a piece of whataboutery.

    It really doesn't matter what some other AG did in the past. That's another conversation. What we're talking about is what Sessions did when he was in the hot seat.

    He suspected that he might be involved in something his subordinates were investigating. Either he stays and oversees an investigation potentially into himself, or he steps aside from it to allow a full investigation that might clear him without any accusations of corruption.

    Is there anything else to it?

    The problem is two-fold:

    1: Most Trump supporters would happily sacrifice anything for Trump to even acknowledge their existence.

    2: Many of them have adopted a Trump-focused morality in which there is no right/wrong or legal/illegal. There is only pleasing to Trump/angers Trump.

    Because of this they really do believe Sessions did something wrong by recusing himself. In their minds he should have used the full power of his office to protect Trump regardless of the oath he took or any legal problems it would cause him. None of that is important compared to his most sacred duty of serving Trump.
