Son, Heir, and Wartime Consigliere of King Athelstan
King Dionysius. He was the one who hung the sword above Damocles' head.
Let's bring back rhyming, however bad it is...
"Left with little, and even more I lost
fear gave me what I craved most
Far and wide I fought for gold
yet cause I found in lands of old
Thunder I brought, defeat I knew not
until mere boil had left me to rot."
Who am I?
The lands of old definitely makes me think of the Middle East rather than America. At first I wanted to saw Baldwin IV of Jerusalem but that didn’t really make sense. I’m not sure this guess does either but I’m going to say Crassus.

Alright so here's what we know:
This person lost their wealth/power/life in the end.
They gained these things through fear.
They fought in other lands for wealth.
They returned to their homeland.
They brought victory and no defeat.
Until "mere boil" (disease?) finally killed them.
I previously guessed Crassus on the basis that "mere boil" was referring to the molten gold but I'm almost certain it is illness that killed them. Maybe the Black Plague? The line about fighting far and white for gold makes me thing potentially crusader, but also could be the Americas. Perhaps even Napoleon would be an interesting guess given that he fought far and wide but I don't necessarily associate him with fear and he didn't really go undefeated prior to his sickness.
Either way I'm going to go with Napoleon just because I really can't think of anyone who fits perfectly

Your analysis is incorrect. The verses are both in chronological order, though second line could refer both to his early and last careers, and in order of importance. In fact, if you're using the English Wiki, you're better off ignoring the first two lines, as you won't find the relevant details there.
It's not Napoleon. None of them.

From my examination of it all, I think it might be Timur (founder of the Timurid Empire).
He used fear to an unimaginable extent in his campaigning (fear gave me what I craved most)
He conquered from India to the Levant, and back again (Far and wide I fought for gold)
He returned to his capital of Samarkand (yet cause I found in lands of old)
He used gunpowder units and I think was undefeated (Thunder I brought, defeat I knew not)
And he died of illness during his planned invasion of Ming China (until mere boil had left me to rot.)
That’s actually a really good guess, and would make sense on a TW forum where he was a second major invasion in Medieval 2

I know. It hits basically all the points. Even if Sar1n had some other dude in mind, I think I get points for this one! Let's just start chanting "Kilo won! Kilo won! Kilo won!" At some point Sar1n will give in
It isn't Timur. There are some parallels, so I can see how you could reach that conclusion. But I doubt Timur died of a boil. Try to think of more stricter interpretation of "fighting for gold" and "cause".
Maybe a mercenary/soldier for hire?
